Fudan University Affiliated Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital is the first specialized eye, ear, nose and throat hospital in New China, and the only tertiary Grade A eye, ear, nose and throat hospital directly under the National Health Commission. The hospital was founded in 1952 by National First-Class Professors Hu Maolian, Guo Bingkuan, and others. After several renamings and developments, it has now formed a "one hospital, two wings" development pattern—the Fengyang Campus and Pujiang Campus constitute the two clinical wings, the Baoqing Road Branch and Yaohua Road Branch serve as demonstration centers for specialized diseases and day surgery centers, and the Shaanxi South Road Innovation Center serves as the innovation source. Multiple campuses are managed in a unified manner and provide homogeneous services. In February 2026, the "Five Senses Health C909 Aircraft Hospital" was approved as the country's first aircraft hospital practice site, marking a new "voyage" for aviation medicine. The hospital has eight clinical departments: Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmic and Otorhinolaryngologic Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Stomatology, and Nursing Department, as well as five medical technology departments: Radiology, Pathology, Pharmacy, Laboratory Medicine, and Nutrition. The actual number of open beds is 753. In 2025, the total outpatient volume exceeded 3.44 million visits, and the surgical volume exceeded 205,000. Both the Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology departments are key disciplines of the Ministry of Education and clinical key specialties of the National Health Commission. The hospital obtained 268 authorized patents, signed 19 transformation project agreements, and successfully transferred 52 patents. Closely focusing on the needs and technical challenges in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of ophthalmic and otorhinolaryngologic diseases and related fields, the hospital has achieved a series of research results with independent intellectual property rights through close cooperation with research institutes and enterprises and joint tackling of key problems integrating industry, academia, research, and medicine. New technologies such as gene therapy for deafness and viral keratitis, and artificial intelligence diagnosis of visual and auditory diseases are at the international frontier. Since 2020, the hospital has received 15 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research awards, including 1 First Prize of Natural Science Award of Higher Education Institutions and 2 First Prizes of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award. A number of patents, including "Gene Therapy for Deafness," "Vertigo Diagnosis and Treatment System," "An Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Optimization Technology for Intraocular Lens Power Calculation in High Myopia," and "An Ocular Sustained-Release Drug Delivery Implant and Its Manufacturing Method," have been successfully transformed into clinical applications. Since 2020, the hospital has established an internet hospital and actively explored innovative operating models, "adapting to local conditions," and in the spirit of "small steps, fast running, rapid iteration," combined with smart hospital construction, to gradually achieve the goal of hospital digital transformation and provide continuously improved services for both doctors and patients in terms of scope, functions, and convenience. It has established refractive archives and hearing archives with specialty characteristics, providing comprehensive and full-cycle visual and hearing health management. By drawing trend charts, visual acuity and hearing trends are visualized, and health education guidance is provided simultaneously. Early intervention and early treatment are carried out for high-risk groups and patients, helping patients track their vision and hearing conditions. At the same time, the internet hospital is used to complete patient follow-up visits, issue electronic prescriptions for examinations and treatments, and provide drug delivery services, offering comprehensive and full-cycle eye visual health and hearing health management. Since 2016, the hospital's internet hospital has cumulatively provided more than 800,000 online consultations, with patient satisfaction reaching 98%. The hospital's internet hospital was selected among the top 100 outstanding cases in the first Internet Hospital Practice Excellent Cases and was included as an excellent case in the "2022 China Internet Hospital Development Report" and the "2022 Collection of Outstanding Internet Hospital Practice Cases." In 2023, on the basis of integrating the achievements of digital transformation 1.0 and 2.0, the hospital introduced a new generation of intelligent technologies including knowledge graphs and natural language processing, combined them with digital medical services, and integrated AI intelligent guidance and triage, precise appointments, pre-consultation, and electronic medical records to improve patient diagnosis and treatment efficiency, shorten waiting time in the hospital, and release outpatient space.
