The Department of Ophthalmology was founded in 1952 by Professor Guo Bingkuan, a renowned ophthalmology educator and first-class professor in China. After nearly 70 years of development, our Department of Ophthalmology has grown into an ophthalmology center that integrates medical care, teaching, and research, with a complete range of ophthalmology subspecialties, exquisite medical technology, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, and strong research capabilities, leading domestically and enjoying international recognition. The Department of Ophthalmology has ranked among the top three nationwide in the Best Specialty Reputation Rankings of Chinese Hospitals for more than ten consecutive years. Our Department of Ophthalmology is a National Key Discipline of the Ministry of Education and a National Clinical Key Specialty of the National Health Commission. It is among the first batch of master's and doctoral degree training sites and postdoctoral mobile stations of the Ministry of Education. The Department of Ophthalmology has the National Health Commission Key Laboratory of Myopia, the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Visual Impairment and Restoration, the Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Laser and Naked-Eye 3D Visual Health, the Shanghai Research Center of Optometry, the Shanghai Myopia Correction Research Center (Shanghai Top-Priority Research Center), and the Shanghai Ophthalmology Clinical Quality Control Center. It is among the first national-level standardized residency training bases and a Shanghai specialist physician standardized training base, and is also a permanent institution of the Shanghai Red Cross Eye Bank. Our Department of Ophthalmology has now formed a new pattern of coordinated development across the Fengyang, Baoqing, Pujiang, and Pudong campuses and the Innovation Center, namely "four campuses and one center." The Department of Ophthalmology has a total of 221 practicing physicians, including 38 with senior professional titles and 57 with associate senior professional titles, 30 doctoral supervisors, and 27 master's supervisors. The talent team is characterized by a younger age structure, with physicians aged 50 and below accounting for 90.5% of the total number of ophthalmology physicians, and those with postgraduate degrees or above accounting for 99.1% of the total number of ophthalmology physicians. There are 35 full-time research personnel, with 28.6% holding senior professional titles. The Department of Ophthalmology has established an academic expert team led by outstanding clinical experts and high-end research talents, including 1 President-elect of the Chinese Medical Association Ophthalmology Branch, 4 National Health Outstanding Contribution Young and Middle-aged Experts, 1 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars recipient, 2 National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars recipients, and 5 Shanghai Leading Talents, among others. The Department of Ophthalmology has led and undertaken national and local major and key projects, including the National Key R&D Program Key Special Project on Stem Cells and Translational Research, the Digital Diagnosis and Treatment Equipment R&D Special Project, Key Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the National Health Public Welfare Industry Research Special Project. It has received more than 40 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research awards, including the Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award, the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of the Technological Invention Award of the Ministry of Education, and the First Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award. The Department of Ophthalmology currently has eight tertiary disciplines: Cataract and Lens Diseases, Vitreoretinal Diseases, Glaucoma and Optic Nerve Diseases, Optometry, Ocular Surface Diseases, Orbit and Ocular Oncology, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and Amblyopia, and Comprehensive Ophthalmology. In addition, it also has a Low Vision group, a Blindness Prevention and Treatment group, an Ophthalmology Traditional Chinese Medicine group, and an Ophthalmology Examination Center. Each tertiary discipline develops in a balanced manner, all reaching the leading domestic level and comparable to international diagnosis and treatment levels in the same fields. It has established specialty centers including the Refractory Glaucoma Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Dry Eye Comprehensive Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Congenital Cataract Precision Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Refractive Cataract Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Intraocular Lens Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Thyroid Eye Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Intraocular Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Complex Fundus Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Congenital Lens Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Macular Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Ocular Trauma Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Neuro-Ophthalmology Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, High Myopia Fundus Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and IOL Dislocation Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, diagnosing and treating a large number of complex cases from all over the country each year. The average annual outpatient visits of our Department of Ophthalmology are about more than 1.4 million, and the annual total surgical volume is more than 95,000 cases. In recent years, the Department of Ophthalmology has empowered smart healthcare with digital technology, with annual Internet outpatient service visits reaching more than 100,000. It has continuously innovated service models and always adhered to the service tenet of "patient interests first, medical quality first." In the National Hospital Internet Influence Specialty Rankings, our Department of Ophthalmology has ranked first/second nationwide for many years and has become one of the most trusted ophthalmic specialty hospitals in the minds of the public.
