Department of Cardiac Surgery, Peking University Third Hospital, was established in 1986 and is currently dedicated to minimally invasive coronary artery surgery and surgical treatment of heart failure. The Department of Cardiac Surgery at Peking University Third Hospital was founded in 1986. Through 30 years of relentless dedication and the meticulous efforts of generations of cardiac surgeons, it has grown into a renowned cardiac surgery center in Beijing and across the nation. Currently, the department comprises a cardiac surgery ward, a cardiac surgery intensive care unit (ICU), and a cardiac surgery research laboratory. It is equipped with first-class facilities, including cardiopulmonary bypass machines, intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) devices, ventricular assist devices, continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH) machines, and echocardiography systems (including transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography probes). The department currently has over 60 medical staff members, including 2 chief physicians, 7 associate chief physicians, and 4 attending physicians. Guided by the core philosophy of patient-centered care, the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Peking University Third Hospital continuously pursues technological innovation and advancement while ensuring optimal medical quality. To date, the department has taken the lead nationwide in successfully performing a series of innovative procedures, including minimally invasive off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB), small-incision (minimally invasive) single-vessel and multi-vessel coronary artery bypass grafting, hybrid coronary revascularization combining surgical and interventional approaches, implantation of ventricular assist devices, heart transplantation, endovascular stent grafting for thoracic aortic diseases, and total thoracoscopic minimally invasive cardiac surgery. These efforts have progressively established the department as a clinical specialty led by minimally invasive coronary artery surgery, characterized by a diverse range of minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures, and encompassing all cardiac surgery subspecialties, including heart valve surgery, aortic surgery, arrhythmia surgery, congenital heart disease correction, and surgical treatment of heart failure. Currently, the Department of Cardiac Surgery and its collaborative team perform over 1,000 surgical procedures annually, ranking among the top in Beijing. Among these, the total number of small-incision (minimally invasive) single-vessel and multi-vessel coronary artery bypass grafting procedures ranks first nationwide, and off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting holds a leading position in China. In recent years, the department has successfully carried out a full spectrum of heart valve surgeries and expanded minimally invasive techniques to other cardiac surgery fields, such as arrhythmia and congenital heart disease. Additionally, the department has established a clinical base for the surgical treatment of heart failure, sequentially introducing a range of novel surgical approaches for this condition. As a pioneer in the innovation of coronary artery surgical techniques and a practitioner of minimally invasive cardiac surgery in China, we remain committed to this mission, continuously delivering higher-quality, more advanced, and superior medical services to our patients.
