Research Work
1) Independently developed a novel surgical technique, "Autologous Bruch's Membrane with Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) Cell Transplantation for the Treatment of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)," involving surgery in the "forbidden zone" of fundus surgery — submacular and choroidal surgery. This work was awarded the Best Paper at the 2007 American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting (the world's largest and most prestigious ophthalmology academic conference). The judging experts commented that the design of this technique and the entirely novel surgical approach were undoubtedly original work. During the meeting, the AAO newsroom issued press releases to more than 30 major media outlets in the United States, publicizing this significant technological breakthrough in the treatment of AMD. The related article was subsequently published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science (IOVS), a leading international ophthalmology journal. This represented a successful demonstration of China's latest achievements in ophthalmology on the international stage. 2) Established an ophthalmic genetic disease diagnosis and consultation platform. Using an independently developed "hereditary eye disease gene diagnostic chip" combined with Sanger sequencing, pathogenic gene diagnosis has been successfully completed for 24 large pedigree samples; using PCR amplification and Sanger sequencing, genetic diagnosis has been successfully completed for more than 30 pedigree samples. Providing pathogenic gene testing and genetic counseling for patients with hereditary ophthalmic diseases is not only conducive to clinical diagnosis of diseases, but also of great significance for clinical treatment, prognostic evaluation, eugenics, and the improvement of research standards in this field. 3) In 2007, with funding from the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), established the "Peking University Lilly Diabetes Eye Center." After considering the overall level of medical care in China, regional characteristics, and population distribution, a strategic approach was established to develop collaborative hospitals in remote, impoverished, and underdeveloped areas and to build a nationwide network for diabetes-related blindness prevention and treatment. To date, more than 30 collaborative sites have been established in the suburbs of Beijing and in provinces including Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Zhejiang, and Liaoning, with standardized screening and clinical diagnosis and treatment protocols developed. This has made an important contribution to exploring an effective model for diabetes-related eye disease prevention and treatment for developing countries worldwide. 4) The Eye Injury Vitrectomy Study (EIVS), initiated in 1997, is currently the multicenter prospective cohort study with the largest number of severe eye injury cases, the most complete registration data, the longest mean follow-up duration, and the highest response rate internationally. To date, more than 2,000 cases have been registered.
