Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Master’s Supervisor, MD. Deputy Director of the Department of Pancreatic Surgery, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University. Postdoctoral Fellow in Pancreatic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, USA.
【Clinical Expertise】He has 28 years of experience in general surgery and 20 years in pancreatic surgery. He boasts extensive clinical experience in managing benign and malignant pancreatic tumors, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, benign and malignant duodenal tumors, gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms, and autoimmune pancreatitis. His major research focuses on surgical treatment and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for pancreatic tumors, having performed nearly 2,000 pancreatic operations as the primary surgeon. The rate of adjuvant therapy after pancreatic cancer surgery exceeds 85 %, and the 5‑year postoperative survival rate reaches 50 %.Since 2015, Professor Wu Wenchuan has managed 230 sessions of the pancreatic tumor MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) program at Zhongshan Hospital, serving more than 2,000 patients with complex pancreatic tumors. This program has become a domestic MDT benchmark, promoting standardized, comprehensive and precise treatment for pancreatic cancer and pancreatic cystic neoplasms. It has lifted the median postoperative survival time of pancreatic cancer to 36 months, with a postoperative 5‑year survival rate above 30 %, achieving internationally advanced therapeutic outcomes. In July 2021, he founded the pancreatic tumor XMDT (Xiamen MDT) at the Xiamen Campus, which held 23 sessions within one year and served approximately 200 patients. He possesses distinctive expertise in the differential diagnosis and management of pancreatic cystic neoplasms. Preoperatively, he conducts thorough assessments covering tumor types, canceration risk within the expected survival period (expected survival period = average life expectancy − patient age), as well as surgical risks and changes in postoperative quality of life, before making prudent treatment decisions. He was the first in China to apply the small‑bowel derotation technique in radical pancreatoduodenectomy for pancreatic head cancer. This technique simplifies complete resection of the pancreatic mesentery and addresses the anatomical challenges of extended retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy. Based on this technique, he innovatively developed a semi‑derotation approach to overcome anatomical limitations of the conventional artery‑first strategy. He pioneered a novel pancreaticojejunostomy technique internationally: the cross‑horizontal mattress “back‑to‑back” anastomosis. Its three technical variants are adaptable to diverse pancreatic conditions, lowering the incidence of grade B pancreatic fistula to below 5 % and keeping grade C pancreatic fistula close to zero. He invented a dual‑lumen drainage tube allowing intermittent irrigation and continuous drainage, along with its unique advanced application method, for which a utility model patent has been granted (Patent No. ZL201210191445.3). Patency of abdominal drainage is restored by replacing postoperative drainage tubes. The adoption of these two innovations has substantially improved surgical safety, reduced the incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula, enhanced the management capacity for pancreatic fistula and abdominal infection, and greatly lowered the re‑operation rate.【Scientific Research Achievements】He has long been engaged in clinical research on pancreatic cystic neoplasms, research on key techniques for pancreatic surgery, as well as genomics and immunology of pancreatic cancer.
