He has been engaged in gastroenterology for more than 30 years. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal, hepatic and biliary diseases, and possesses extensive clinical experience in managing peptic ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease, inflammatory bowel disease, liver cirrhosis and its complications. He holds distinctive insights into the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of liver cirrhosis and its complications, ascites, jaundice and other conditions. He has long been committed to the clinical practice and research of chronic liver diseases such as liver fibrosis and liver cancer.

He has presided over nearly 10 research projects including the National 863 Program, projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and key projects of Shanghai Municipality. He has filed and obtained 5 major patents. As the principal completer, he has won two Second‑class Prizes of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, one Second‑class Prize of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award, and one Third‑class Prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award. As the first author or corresponding author, he has published more than 70 SCI papers in journals including *Journal of Hepatology* and *Hepatology*. He has participated in compiling 8 monographs such as *Practical Internal Medicine* and *Shanghai Clinical Practice Guidelines for Internal Medicine*.
