The current President of Zhongshan Hospital has been engaged in clinical and applied basic research on liver cancer for more than 30 years, with clinical experience in over 10,000 hepatectomies and more than 3,000 liver transplantations.

He successfully performed the world's first dual-graft liver transplantation using living-related donor liver plus discarded liver, the world's first pediatric liver transplantation with discarded liver, and the world's first combined discarded liver transplantation and ALPPS procedure. These innovations expanded the donor liver pool and achieved new breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of critical illnesses. He conducted Asia's first ALPPS procedure. His team leads the world in the number of ALPPS operations and the post-ALPPS survival rate of patients with intermediate and advanced liver cancer, saving the lives of numerous such patients.

He established models for early liver cancer diagnosis and novel individualized treatment strategies, developed a circulating miRNA-based early diagnostic model for liver cancer which has obtained registration approval from the National Medical Products Administration. This model has been applied in nearly 200 hospitals nationwide for more than 2 million person-times, facilitating early diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer in China. He has multi-dimensionally revealed new mechanisms underlying liver cancer metastasis and recurrence, revising the international conventional view that all early postoperative recurrences of liver cancer are ancestral recurrences, and laying theoretical and practical foundations for precise prevention and treatment of postoperative liver cancer recurrence. Internationally, he discovered and defined the 500 µm tumor invasive front zone, opening up a new direction for exploring the invasion and metastasis mechanisms of malignant solid tumors and identifying novel therapeutic targets. He first proposed the CNLC (China Liver Cancer) staging system tailored to the Chinese population, and led the drafting of the *Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Liver Cancer* issued by the National Health Commission. Widely promoted across China, these guidelines have effectively elevated the overall standard of liver cancer diagnosis and treatment in the country. He has published over 500 papers in journals including Cell, Nature, Annals of Surgery, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, among which 129 SCI papers were published as first or corresponding authors (including co-authors). His H-index is 79. He holds 18 authorized invention patents, all of which have been transferred for industrial application.
