A world-renowned researcher in liver cancer and a founding figure in the early diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer. He was the first in the world to systematically put forward the concept of "subclinical liver cancer" and edited the English monograph *Subclinical Liver Cancer*. Hans Popper, the founding father of international hepatology, stated that "this concept represents a major advance in human understanding and treatment of liver cancer". This finding doubled the 5-year survival rate after surgical resection of liver cancer and transformed liver cancer from an "incurable disease" to a "partially curable disease". In recent years, he has devoted himself to "research on liver cancer metastasis and recurrence". He was the first internationally to establish metastatic human liver cancer nude mouse models and cell models, which have been successfully applied to studies of liver cancer metastasis. He served as chair of the liver cancer session at the International Cancer Congress twice, delivered over 90 invited lectures at international conferences, and organized and chaired 7 Shanghai International Conferences on Liver Cancer and Hepatitis. He is an editorial board member of 11 international journals and editor-in-chief of 2 Asia-Pacific journals. He has edited 9 monographs and contributed to 16 international monographs. He has published 288 SCI papers on liver cancer research, which have been cited 6759 times, ranking 3rd globally (1st in mainland China) in the field of liver cancer. In 1979, he was awarded the "Early Detection and Cure" Gold Medal by the American Institute for Cancer Research, which established China's international standing in liver cancer research.
