The Department of Vascular Surgery at Renji Hospital was founded in the late 1970s, with Professor Zhang Baigen, a renowned domestic expert in vascular surgery, as its academic leader. This discipline is a national key construction discipline under the "Project 211," a national key clinical specialty (General Surgery), one of the Vascular Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Centers of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the earliest approved clinical drug trial site for vascular surgery in China. Over the years, our Department of Vascular Surgery has accumulated extensive clinical experience in the diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of peripheral vascular diseases. With the goal of addressing the diagnosis and treatment of major and complex vascular surgical conditions, the discipline utilizes the most advanced technologies and has developed distinctive expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of lower extremity arteriosclerosis obliterans, aortic aneurysm/dissection, visceral vascular diseases, venous thromboembolism, lower extremity venous insufficiency, and construction of hemodialysis access for uremia, achieving a leading domestic level of clinical technical proficiency.
The Department of Vascular Surgery at Renji Hospital has also consistently maintained a leading domestic level in basic research. It has successively received over 30 funded research projects of various types, including National Natural Science Foundation of China projects and sub-projects of the National 863 Program, and has completed 11 project appraisals. It has received clinical achievement awards at various levels, including the Shanghai Science and Technology Achievement Award and the First Shanghai Medical Achievement Award. In the past three years, the department has had 12 ongoing research projects, including 6 national-level projects and 3 provincial- and municipal-level projects.
