Chief Physician, Professor, Doctoral Supervisor, Executive Deputy Director of General Surgery, Director of the Second Department of Hepatobiliary‑Pancreatic Surgery / Soft Tissue and Retroperitoneal Tumor Center, and Director of the International Cooperation Department at Peking University Cancer Hospital, as well as Honorary Professor of Cardiff University. He has pursued academic exchanges at the California Pacific Medical Center in the United States, the Faculty of Medicine of Louis Pasteur University in France, and Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States. He has been funded by one Special Project for International Science and Technology Cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Technology, four grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, alongside key projects of the Capital Medical Development Fund, Beijing Natural Science Foundation, and the former Beijing Hospital Authority’s "Sailing Program", among other research grants. In 2009, he was selected as the academic leader of hepatobiliary‑pancreatic oncology surgery under Beijing’s "215 Talent Project" and an outstanding health talent in Beijing’s "Ten‑Hundred‑Thousand" Talent Program. In 2017, he was named a leading health talent under Beijing’s "High‑End Innovation Talent Program" and enrolled in the former Beijing Hospital Authority’s "Peak Talent Training Program". He received the Golden Scalpel Award at the 2017 "Honor Life‑Glorious Physicians" public‑welfare selection, the 2020 Peking University Zhongwai Medical Award, and the Outstanding Achievement Award at the 5th "People’s Famous Doctor" Awards in 2022.

He has long been committed to the diagnosis, surgical and multimodal treatment, and translational medical research of hepatobiliary‑pancreatic tumors and retroperitoneal tumors, and has cultivated a dedicated, competent and progressive departmental talent team. His team attaches importance to the biological behavior of tumors and the holistic perspective of oncotherapy, advocates the philosophy of "hands guided by mind, integrating concepts with techniques", and emphasizes precise patient stratification and tailor‑made individualized treatment. On the one hand, for properly evaluated patients with definite indications, the team performs highly‑difficult and innovative operations including complex pancreatic cancer surgery with combined vascular resection and reconstruction, retroperitoneal sarcoma surgery with multivisceral resection, and Associating Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy (ALPPS), bringing hope to numerous patients and their families with limited treatment options. On the other hand, with appropriate indications, the team prioritizes trauma control and minimally‑invasive principles, and actively carries out laparoscopic and robot‑assisted resection of hepatobiliary‑pancreatic neoplasms, as well as organ‑function‑preserving surgeries for pancreatic and duodenal tumors.

In recent years, he has led his team to develop comprehensive perioperative therapies and initiated or participated in multiple clinical studies, covering perioperative chemotherapy‑targeted‑immunotherapy for retroperitoneal sarcoma, conversion therapy for borderline‑resectable / locally advanced pancreatic cancer, perioperative conversion therapy for complex hepatocellular carcinoma / cholangiocarcinoma, and multimodal treatment of colorectal cancer liver metastasis. The team aims to maximize patients’ survival benefits through individualized comprehensive therapy.

In the field of hepatobiliary‑pancreatic oncology, he drafted China’s first clinical guideline for colorectal cancer liver metastasis in 2007, and jointly established the multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment platform for colorectal cancer liver metastasis at Peking University Cancer Hospital with relevant in‑hospital departments. In 2009, he pioneered pancreaticoduodenectomy with extensive portal‑superior mesenteric vein resection and anastomosis without artificial vascular graft replacement in China and published relevant papers. He completed the first ALPPS procedure in Asia in 2012 and published related research in 2014.

For retroperitoneal tumors, he published China’s first expert consensus on retroperitoneal soft‑tissue sarcoma, namely Expert Consensus on Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Retroperitoneal Soft‑Tissue Sarcoma from Peking University Cancer Hospital, in 2015. Building on this work, he collaborated with the Surgical Technique Group of the Chinese Society of Surgery under Chinese Medical Association, the Sarcoma Committee of Chinese Anti‑Cancer Association, and the Soft Tissue Tumor Branch of China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care to release the Chinese Expert Consensus on Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Retroperitoneal Soft‑Tissue Sarcoma in 2019. He founded the Multidisciplinary Collaboration Platform for Soft‑Tissue and Retroperitoneal Tumors at Peking University Cancer Hospital and China’s first Soft‑Tissue and Retroperitoneal Tumor Center in 2015, and set up the Expert Committee under the Soft Tissue Tumor Branch of China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care in 2016, making substantial contributions to promoting standardized treatment of retroperitoneal sarcoma nationwide.
