Focusing on major scientific and‑technological challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer, he led the establishment of a surgery‑centered comprehensive diagnosis‑and‑treatment system for gastric cancer. This system has generated a new precision surgery framework, a novel perioperative chemotherapy model and innovative immunotherapy strategies, which have markedly improved patients’ long‑term survival and quality of life, and set multiple new international standards. He has published 298 SCI papers in journals including JAMA, Science, Cell, PNAS, Lancet Oncol (3 papers), Nat Med (2 papers) and STTT (2 papers), among which 9 are highly‑cited papers, with a total citation count of 27066 and an H‑index of 73. He presided over the formulation of 23 guidelines and consensus statements, including China’s first clinical practice guideline for gastric cancer and the gastric cancer diagnosis‑and‑treatment guideline issued by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China. He has edited 18 monographs, among which is the world’s first English‑language monograph on gastric cancer. He founded the Chin J Cancer Res journal, which is indexed by SCI. He holds 20 authorized patents and has obtained one Class‑1 National New Drug Certificate. His honours include the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award and the Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress. As the first‑ranked principal investigator, he was awarded one Second‑Class National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology and four Provincial‑Ministerial First‑Class Prizes.
