Profile: Director of the Department of Nephrology, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, and doctoral supervisor. Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. She pursued her doctoral degree at the age of 40, studied at Harvard University as a visiting scholar at 45, and was elected a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at 59, ending an eight-year gap without any female academicians in Guangdong. One of her research achievements has been internationally hailed as "transforming the strategies for the treatment of chronic kidney disease". She has received numerous honours including two Second-Class National Awards for Progress in Science and Technology and four First-Class Provincial and Ministerial Awards for Progress in Science and Technology. Meanwhile, she is an outstanding clinician with superb medical skills and noble medical ethics, deeply loved by patients and their families.

Medical career: She graduated from Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences and obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1993. She conducted research at Harvard Medical School in the United States from June 1995 to December 1998. Since 1999, she has served as Director of the PLA Institute of Nephrology (now the Institute of Nephrology, Southern Medical University), Professor of Internal Medicine at the First Military Medical University (now Southern Medical University), and Director of the Department of Nephrology at Nanfang Hospital.

Her specialty lies in the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease.
