Education and Work Experience

He obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1983 and began his career in general surgery. He earned his master’s degree in Surgery in 1985 and a doctoral degree in 1994. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1994. From 1995 to 1996, he conducted postdoctoral research in general surgery and organ transplantation in Germany. At the end of 1996, he joined the Department of Organ Transplantation at The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. He was promoted to Professor in 2000, and became a Doctoral Supervisor and Deputy Director of the Transplantation Department in 2003, holding the rank of Grade 3 Professor.

Through long-term practice, he has mastered the full spectrum of clinical management for organ transplantation and accumulated abundant clinical experience, with strong organizational and coordination capabilities. His achievements have won national and multiple provincial and ministerial science and technology awards.

Research Interests

Liver transplantation, abdominal multi-organ transplantation, combined pancreas-kidney transplantation, and transplant immune tolerance.

Since graduation, he has worked in general surgery covering hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal surgery, capable of managing common general surgical conditions and performing highly complex operations. He started his work in organ transplantation in 1991. To date, he has participated in more than 1000 liver transplantations, over 600 of which he performed as the primary surgeon.

Clinical Expertise

His operative scope includes classic orthotopic liver transplantation, piggyback liver transplantation, modified piggyback liver transplantation, reduced-size liver transplantation and pediatric liver transplantation, as well as combined liver-kidney transplantation. He accomplished the first upper abdominal cluster transplantation in Asia (13 cases completed), the first combined liver and small bowel transplantation in Asia, China’s first “two livers for three recipients” transplantation, China’s first liver transplantation combined with pancreaticoduodenectomy, living-related small bowel transplantation between mother and child, South China’s first living right-lobe liver transplantation (with middle hepatic vein), China’s first segmental liver transplantation, and the first combined pancreas-kidney transplantation at Sun Yat-sen University (16 cases completed).
