Education and Work Experience

1980 – 1985: Bachelor of Clinical Medicine, Suzhou Medical College. After graduation, he worked at the Department of Urology, Affiliated Nanhua Hospital, University of South China. 1988 – Present: He pursued further training and worked at The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. He obtained his master’s degree in Urology in 1991 and a doctoral degree in Transplant Surgery in 1999. He was promoted to Associate Chief Physician in the same year and Chief Physician in 2004. 2000: He conducted research on transplant immunology at the Novartis Transplantation Immunology Research Center, University of Basel, Switzerland. Upon returning to China, he dedicated himself to clinical practice and research in kidney transplantation. 2004 – 2009: Deputy Director of the Surgical Laboratory (concurrent appointment). Oct 2009 – Present: Director of the Department of Organ Transplantation.

Research Interests

Pharmacogenomics and pharmacokinetics of immunosuppressants, development of novel immunosuppressive agents, renal ischemia-reperfusion injury, stem cell transplantation and transplant immune tolerance.

Clinical Expertise

He began his research in kidney transplantation in 1989 and has accumulated experience with more than 2000 transplant cases, including over 700 kidney transplant operations performed by himself. He has successfully performed kidney transplantation for dozens of children, elderly recipients and patients with severe lower urinary tract anomalies. He is experienced in managing post-transplant rejection and severe infections such as CMV pneumonia, fungal pneumonia and tuberculosis. The 10-year patient and graft survival rate of his transplant recipients reaches 90%. He is among the top specialists in China with the largest case volume and optimal outcomes of pediatric kidney transplantation. Since taking charge of the kidney transplant program in 2009, his team has completed the largest number of DCD kidney transplants nationwide.
