Education and Work Experience

He is the Director and Academic Leader of the Organ Transplantation Center of The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, a Central Health Care Specialist, Visiting Professor at Harvard University and Cornell University, and Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He also serves as the China Champion of The Transplantation Society.

Guided by unmet clinical needs such as suboptimal transplant outcomes and organ shortage, he has achieved systematic original innovations in normothermic organ transplantation, organ medicine, multi-organ transplantation and organ donation:

1. He invented the normothermic organ transplantation technique, tackling the global challenge of organ ischemic injury. This achievement was selected as one of the “Top 10 Scientific and Technological Innovations of 2017” by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
2. He put forward the concept of “Organ Medicine”, opening a new field for research and treatment at the organ level. His work won the National Championship of the Biomedicine Track in the China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
3. He established a simplified technical system for multi-organ transplantation, offering curative treatment for end-stage multi-organ diseases. This earned the Second Class National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2015.
4. He overcame technical bottlenecks in donation after cardiac death (DCD), providing technical support for China’s reform of voluntary organ donation.

Clinical Expertise

He specializes in liver transplantation for various end-stage liver diseases, isolated therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma, extracorporeal liver support for liver failure, small bowel transplantation and multi-organ transplantation.
