Research Interests Clinical research: diagnosis and treatment of cervical disorders and spinal tumors. Basic research: mechanisms of spinal metastasis of tumors and orthopedic biomaterials.

Clinical Expertise He has profound attainments in the management of upper cervical deformities and injuries, spinal tumors, cervical surgery, pediatric spine surgery, spinal cord injury, scoliosis, spinal infection, cervical spondylosis and lumbar degenerative diseases. He possesses distinctive experience in treating upper cervical lesions such as atlantoaxial dislocation and basilar invagination. Microsurgical minimally invasive spine surgery is his signature technique. He was among the first to popularize it as a routine procedure in China, which improves surgical safety, reduces trauma and enhances clinical outcomes. He has pioneered a host of innovative spinal procedures, including retropharyngeal approach for subtotal resection of the axis, fixation using lateral mass screws of the atlas and pedicle screws of the axis, occipitocervical fusion with axis pedicle screws, traction combined with posterior occipitocervical reduction and fixation for basilar invagination, cervical pedicle screw fixation, artificial cervical disc replacement, posterior hemivertebra resection with pedicle screw fixation in young children, total spondylectomy and reconstruction for spinal tumors, and the application of microsurgical minimally invasive techniques in spine surgery.
