Department Details
The International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was founded on September 18, 1952. For over sixty years, following the principles of "experimental, demonstrative, and strengthening scientific research" advocated by Soong Ching Ling and Zhou Enlai for the China Welfare Institute, the hospital has developed into a municipal-level specialized maternal and child health hospital integrating medical care, healthcare, scientific research, and teaching.
As a municipal-level specialized obstetrics and gynecology hospital, the hospital places particular emphasis on the development of perinatal disciplines. Since 1964, the hospital pioneered the nationwide implementation of self-monitoring during pregnancy at home and a consistent system of outpatient management for pregnant women; in 1975, it began amniotic fluid chromosome testing; in 1982, it piloted rooming-in for mothers and infants and advocated breastfeeding; in 1992, it established the city's earliest "Shanghai Perinatal Consultation Clinic," composed of a diagnostic and treatment team of renowned obstetrics and gynecology, pediatric, and ultrasound experts in Shanghai, primarily conducting screening and diagnosis of fetal genetic diseases and intrauterine developmental defects, as well as diagnostic analysis of complex perinatal conditions; in 1994, it merged the previously independent obstetrics and neonatology departments to establish Shanghai's earliest perinatal department, comprehensively implementing the "pregnant woman and infant-centered" service concept to further improve perinatal quality; in 1997, it introduced labor analgesia; in 1998, it implemented a transformation in delivery and midwifery service models, promoting a "consistent" service model for prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care; in 2000, it introduced the "one-on-one midwife continuous doula companionship during delivery" intrapartum service model. In 2005, the Prenatal Diagnosis Center was established. Building on the existing amniotic fluid cell chromosome karyotype analysis, it gradually introduced cord blood chromosome testing, chorionic villus chromosome testing, rapid amniotic fluid cell diagnostic techniques, intrauterine transfusion techniques, radiofrequency fetal reduction techniques, amnioinfusion techniques, fetal thoracoabdominal puncture, and a series of other intrauterine treatment methods that are now routinely performed at the center.
Through long-term clinical practice, the obstetrics department has built a strong disciplinary team, with personnel holding master's degrees or above accounting for over 60% of the total. Many physicians have pursued further studies in Europe, America, Japan, Hong Kong, and other places. In clinical work, adhering to the principle of equally emphasizing medical care and scientific research, the department has undertaken multiple national and provincial/ministerial-level research projects and published hundreds of academic papers of various types. The obstetrics department serves as a clinical teaching demonstration base for Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, receiving interns from undergraduate and master's programs of the medical school annually, as well as senior physicians from across the country for further training.
Since the hospital's founding, through the unremitting efforts of several generations, the annual number of deliveries has consistently ranked among the highest in the city. Over the past 60 years, more than 300,000 infants have been born in our hospital. In recent years, the proportion of high-risk pregnancies among admitted pregnant women has reached 75%, the success rate of rescuing critical cases has reached 100%, and the perinatal mortality rate has consistently remained below 3-4‰, reaching the level of developed countries. In 2015, the hospital established an obstetric ICU, continuously improving the diagnosis and treatment of various pregnancy complications such as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), placental abruption, postpartum hemorrhage, etc.
