The Department of Anesthesiology at Fudan University Affiliated Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital became an independent clinical department in 1989. It currently has 56 medical staff, including 1 chief physician, 6 associate chief physicians, 26 attending physicians, 7 resident physicians, and 15 anesthesia nurses; more than 80% of the physicians hold master's or doctoral degrees. Each year, the department completes over 5,000 cases of general anesthesia for ophthalmology and more than 15,000 cases of general anesthesia for otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery; laryngeal mask anesthesia, inhalation anesthesia, and difficult airway management are the clinical specialties of the department. The current department director is Chief Physician Li Wenxian. The Department of Anesthesiology currently has 1 doctoral supervisor and 1 master's supervisor. As a doctoral and master's degree program in anesthesiology at Fudan University and a "Shanghai Resident Standardized Training Teaching Base," it undertakes the teaching and training of graduate students, resident physicians, and visiting physicians; each year, it holds several clinical training sessions for anesthesiologists from all over the country. The scientific research projects carried out by the department involve fields such as the effects of anesthetic drugs on the neurodevelopment of pediatric and neonatal animals, respiratory management in airway surgery, and the effects of neuromuscular blockade on facial nerve monitoring. To date, it has received 3 general projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 Youth Science Fund project from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 5 projects from the Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and 4 scientific research projects from the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission, published 27 SCI papers and 39 core journal papers, and obtained 7 national utility model patents. Adhering to the hospital motto of "Excellence, Unity, Pragmatism, and Innovation," the disciplinary positioning of the Department of Anesthesiology is: a clinical discipline that serves the development needs of the hospital, leads domestically in ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology anesthesia, and achieves coordinated overall development in medical care, teaching, and research.
