Standardizing Nutrition Diagnosis and Treatment to Improve Clinical Outcomes
Clinical nutrition work is an important part of medical work. Timely, reasonable, and correct nutrition therapy not only helps clinical treatment, but is also the key to promoting disease recovery and improving patients' quality of life. The department is equipped with a variety of professional instruments and equipment, such as body composition analyzers, handgrip dynamometers, and skinfold calipers. It undertakes nutrition consultations for inpatients, nutrition screening and assessment for patients with various types of malnutrition/imbalance, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of enteral and parenteral nutrition, and nutrition ward rounds for key patients. It has promoted the establishment of a standardized diagnosis and treatment pathway for nutrition risk screening, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of head and neck diseases, and actively carries out multidisciplinary cooperation. In 2021, together with the Department of Radiation Oncology, it successfully established the "National Standardized Radiation Oncology Nutrition Demonstration Ward." On average each year, with the help of information technology, it conducts preliminary nutrition screening for more than 30,000 person-times, tracks and confirms 3,000 person-times of patients with positive preliminary screening risk, performs nutrition assessment for 1,400 person-times, and receives consultations for 250 person-times of patients with nutritional risk. Since 2021, the department has opened a nutrition clinic. The scope of diagnosis and treatment includes nutritional support during peri-radiotherapy and chemotherapy for head and neck tumors, management strategies for side effects, nutritional support during the perioperative period of head and neck tumors, and dietary guidance related to eye diseases.

The department is responsible for the design, preparation, and supply of basic diets, therapeutic diets, and formula diets for inpatients. There are more than 25 types of meals, and the annual number of meals prepared exceeds 700,000. To meet the diverse needs of patients, it provides a small-pot dish ordering service, and during the pandemic it launched a meal service for family members of inpatients. The nutrition cafeteria implements the HACCP concept to monitor critical control points, integrates the PDCA cycle method into cafeteria management to maintain continuous improvement, successfully established a "Reassuring Cafeteria" in 2018, and was continuously rated as an advanced unit for food safety in Xuhui District, Shanghai, from 2018 to 2021.

For patients with glaucoma, laryngeal cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, hypertension, diabetes, gout, kidney disease, and other conditions, dietitians go deep into the wards to carry out nutrition education, guiding more than 4,000 person-times annually. In addition, the department actively carries out science popularization work, using diverse forms such as online consultations, nutrition lectures, popular science articles, short videos, educational leaflets, folded pamphlets, display boards, and bedside nursing systems.
