Department Details
Our Department of Pathology is primarily engaged in clinical and pathological diagnosis and research of eye, ear, nose, and throat diseases. We specialize in the diagnosis of head and neck diseases, particularly neoplastic lesions. The department currently has 19 diagnostic physicians (6 with senior titles, 6 with intermediate titles, and 7 resident physicians), 4 intermediate-level technicians, and 10 junior-level technicians. We are responsible for routine pathological sectioning, frozen sectioning, special staining, immunohistochemical testing, and molecular pathological testing.
The annual volume of pathological examinations in the department has been increasing year by year, growing from 9,000 cases in 2002 to more than 33,000 cases in 2023, with over 20,000 cases of immunohistochemistry plus special staining and more than 5,000 cases of in situ hybridization. Each year, we receive over 1,000 cases of difficult pathological consultations from various regions, with our service scope covering the entire country and overseas. Expert review has commented that our department's pathology is "characterized by diverse disease types, abundant resources, distinctive features, and is at the advanced domestic level."
The department is well-equipped with advanced technology and equipment, including fully automated tissue dehydrators, embedding machines, cassette printers, fully automated stainers, coverslippers, fully automated immunohistochemistry stainers, paraffin microtomes, cryostats, in situ hybridization instruments, fluorescence microscopes, fully automated nucleic acid extractors, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR systems, HPV testing workstations, digital pathology image scanning systems, and the nation's first fully automated high-definition constant-staining workstation.
Currently, the department's research focuses primarily on molecular diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatment of head and neck tumors. The molecular genetics projects that have been carried out include: fluorescence in situ hybridization, human papillomavirus testing of head and neck tissues, gene mutation detection, as well as gene amplification and sequencing — frontier projects related to precision medicine. These primarily assist in the pathological diagnosis of head and neck tumors and promote the development and advancement of individualized treatment.
