The Rhinology Department is one of the tertiary disciplines of the Otolaryngology Department in our hospital and serves as one of the first batch of extramural innovation unit bases of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences—the Surgical Treatment Innovation Unit for Endoscopic Sinonasal Skull Base Tumors. The Rhinology Department currently has 4 diagnosis and treatment centers: the Sinonasal-Skull Base Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Complex Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Surgical Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Olfactory Disease Diagnosis, Treatment and Research Center, and the Refractory Sinusitis Diagnosis and Treatment Center. It also has 9 subspecialties: sinonasal-orbital related surgery, sinonasal papilloma, olfactory neuroblastoma, sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma, sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma, sinonasal malignant melanoma, pediatric sinonasal skull base tumors, sinonasal soft tissue sarcoma, and endoscopic complex pituitary tumor surgery. The Rhinology Department is led by Chief Physician Li Houyong, who serves as the deputy director of the department (presiding over work). The discipline has an outstanding expert team composed of Shanghai Leading Talents, Shanghai Oriental Scholars, and Shanghai Rising-Star Talents, etc. It currently has 6 professors/chief physicians, 1 researcher, 4 doctoral supervisors, 11 associate chief physicians, and 2 neurosurgery experts. It undertakes a large number of research projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Health Commission, etc. The discipline currently has 43 beds and possesses high-tech instruments and equipment such as ultra-high-definition endoscopic sinus surgery imaging systems, skull base navigation systems, surgical Doppler systems, neuromonitoring devices, and advanced air drills. It carries out various precise surgeries for sinusitis, nasal polyps, benign and malignant tumors of the nasal cavity and sinuses, chronic dacryocystitis, traumatic optic nerve injury, pituitary tumors, chordomas, and other sinonasal-orbital and sinonasal-skull base related diseases, with an annual surgical volume of more than 6,000 cases. The discipline has established standardized treatment protocols for the surgical and comprehensive treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and has established a complete surgical classification of nasopharyngeal carcinoma domestically and internationally. For sinonasal-skull base tumors, by optimizing the combined endoscopic endonasal-transnasal surgical approach, applying navigation systems, intraoperative vascular and nerve monitoring, and skull base reconstruction techniques, it has improved surgical safety measures to completely resect tumors, reaching internationally advanced levels in the treatment of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma, malignant melanoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, olfactory neuroblastoma, giant pituitary tumors, chordomas, etc. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, it has broken through surgical forbidden zones and successfully saved the lives of a large number of patients with advanced sinonasal skull base tumors. In addition, through skull base anatomy research, the application of advanced surgical equipment, and the use of advanced sinonasal skull base surgery concepts, it preserves the corresponding functions of the sinonasal skull base as much as possible on the basis of tumor resection, improves patients' survival rates and quality of life, and places our hospital's Rhinology Department in a leading position in China. At the same time, for common rhinological diseases such as allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, nasal polyps, and olfactory disorders, through medication, immunotherapy, and individualized treatment integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine, standardized treatment protocols have been formed.
