The Otology Center of our hospital is based on the National Key Clinical Specialty of Otolaryngology and the Leading Discipline of Auditory Medicine in Shanghai. It comprises five sub-specialties: Auditory and Speech Disorders, Otoneurology and Skull Base Surgery, Otomicrosurgery, Otoendoscopic Surgery, and Otology. It has a vestibular function laboratory, clinical audiology laboratory, facial nerve function assessment platform, and auditory and speech rehabilitation center with advanced equipment and first-class diagnostic capabilities. Professor Li Huawei, a 973 Chief Scientist, National Distinguished Young Scholar, and Changjiang Scholar, serves as the Director of the Otology Center. The team includes a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education, and multiple New Century Talents, including 5 professors and chief physicians, 6 doctoral supervisors, 3 chief physicians, 16 associate chief physicians, and 1 neurosurgery expert. The Otology Center building at the main campus has 78 beds and 6 state-of-the-art dedicated operating rooms. It performs refined otomicrosurgery aimed at "hearing function reconstruction" for diseases such as otitis media, middle ear cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, and ossicular chain malformation, with the scale and level of surgery leading nationally. In collaboration with neurosurgery experts, it conducts surgery-based comprehensive treatment for lateral skull base tumors such as jugular glomus tumors, acoustic neuromas, and external auditory canal carcinoma, achieving internationally advanced outcomes. For cochlear implantation in patients with profound sensorineural hearing loss, refined otomicrosurgical techniques are employed to preserve residual hearing, combined with preoperative genetic diagnosis to assist in precise evaluation of surgical outcomes, enabling precise diagnosis and treatment of the disease. In the diagnosis and treatment of common otological conditions such as sudden deafness, vertigo, and tinnitus, refined diagnosis of hearing and tinnitus and comprehensive assessment of vestibular function are used to achieve individualized and refined treatment, promoting the rehabilitation of auditory and vestibular functions. The Auditory Medicine Research Center, affiliated with the Key Laboratory of Auditory Medicine of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, is an internationally first-class research and translational platform for auditory medicine. It undertakes numerous research projects from the 973 Program, major research and development programs of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Education, and the National Health and Family Planning Commission. It has long-term stable cooperation and exchanges with many internationally renowned otological medical institutions, including Harvard Medical School's Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, the University of Iowa, and the University of Zurich in Switzerland.
