The discipline of Cataract and Lens Refractive Surgery is a cutting-edge specialty that, building on the foundation of cataract vision restoration and complex surgeries, practices the personalized and precise full-range visual needs of the "refractive cataract surgery era," creates a new one-stop solution for cataract and refractive (myopia, presbyopia, astigmatism) problems, and is fully aligned with first-class international standards. The discipline leader is Professor Zhu Xiangjia, chief physician, doctoral supervisor, recipient of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, Shanghai Youth Science and Technology Talent, and Shanghai Medical Association "Youth Elite," among other honors. He currently serves as Vice President of the Eye Research Institute and Vice President of the Institute of Medical-Engineering Interdisciplinary Innovation at our hospital, and concurrently holds positions including Deputy Secretary-General of the Visual Rehabilitation Committee of the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine and Youth Committee Member and Secretary of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association. This discipline is equipped with the world's most advanced phacoemulsification main control fluidics system, femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery system, and 3D surgical navigation system, among other equipment. It routinely performs various types of cataract surgery and treatment of lens diseases, including age-related cataract, cataract complicated by high myopia, congenital cataract, and others. It features distinctive day-case diagnosis and treatment, with an advanced and elegantly designed cataract day ward established in the Pudong campus, supporting direct billing for commercial insurance. Refractive cataract surgery is a key feature and highlight of this discipline. Through precise preoperative biometric measurement and evaluation, it plans personalized implantation of various functional intraocular lenses for patients. Combined with meticulous surgical operation, it resolves patients' pre-existing refractive problems such as myopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism while performing cataract surgery, achieving further optimization of postoperative visual function. This discipline has introduced a comprehensive range of functional intraocular lenses, including monofocal, bifocal, trifocal, extended depth of focus, astigmatism-correcting, and multifocal toric lenses, providing patients with a convenient one-stop personalized and precise solution. This discipline has also carried out a series of research initiatives targeting cataract complicated by high myopia, which has the highest incidence and blindness rate among Chinese people. It has established an intelligent diagnosis and treatment platform for high myopia cataract with independent intellectual property rights, covering distinctive projects such as precise calculation, intraocular lens optimization, and postoperative follow-up. Related achievements have been incorporated into international clinical guidelines, authoritative international ophthalmology textbooks, and Chinese clinical expert consensus, comprehensively improving the postoperative outcomes of high myopia cataract and significantly reducing complications. Related achievements have received the First Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award and the Gold Award of Shanghai Excellent Invention and Innovation Project, among others. This discipline has strong research and teaching capabilities. It currently has 1 National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars recipient, 2 doctoral supervisors, 2 professors, 2 chief physicians, 4 associate chief physicians, 1 associate researcher, and a professional team composed of more than 20 attending physicians and resident physicians.
