Department Details
The Department of Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Ocular Trauma is a newly established tertiary discipline in recent years. The current academic leader is Professor Jiang Chunhui, Director of the Comprehensive Ophthalmology Department of our hospital and doctoral supervisor. He is the chief scientist of the Ministry of Science and Technology's "13th Five-Year Plan" Digital Diagnosis and Treatment Special Project, with over 30 years of rich experience in ophthalmology-related work; he has presided over 2 special projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology and 5 projects of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission. The comprehensive group has 1 chief physician and 1 associate chief physician; currently, both the number of patients and the volume of surgeries are showing rapid growth, with monthly expert and specialty outpatient visits exceeding 1,000 person-times. It has an interdisciplinary technical backbone team covering retinal, glaucoma, cataract, and other anterior and posterior segment eye diseases, and is at the leading domestic level in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of complex retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, refractory glaucoma, complex cataract, and other diseases.
Since its establishment more than one year ago, this discipline has made considerable progress in all aspects of medical care, education, and research. Based in Shanghai and radiating to East China, it has built a minimally invasive surgery center for intraocular lens dislocation with domestic influence, and established standardized reception, treatment, and follow-up procedures for combined anterior and posterior segment surgery; it has also connected with primary hospitals to create a comprehensive platform integrating related diagnosis and treatment, academic activities, and talent training. It undertakes the standardized training of refresher doctors, graduate students, and resident doctors, and carries out clinical and basic research related to the diagnosis and treatment of comprehensive eye diseases. In terms of scientific research, it focuses on the clinical needs of surgical treatment for blinding diseases. The research covers key technologies of multimodal imaging such as surgical microscopes, binocular stereoscopic imaging, and swept-source OCT imaging, and forms industry standards for the research and development of core components for high-definition binocular stereoscopic imaging and large-depth high-speed swept-source OCT imaging; it develops digital OCT-navigated surgical microscope products for imaging multiple ophthalmic surgical lesion sites in the anterior and posterior segments, and carries out clinical trials and medical device product registration. It develops targeted nanoparticles, uses adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors, and loads wild-type sequences of pathogenic genes, opening up new ideas for the treatment of infectious intraocular diseases, retinal degeneration, and others from the aspects of drug delivery routes and treatment methods, and carries out clinical translation.
