The Department of Oncology at Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is a "Key Discipline in Oncology" of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and a "Top Priority" Key Discipline in Clinical Oncology Medicine in Shanghai. In the 2022 competitiveness ranking of disciplines in municipal hospitals released by the Shanghai Health and Development Research Center, Renji Oncology ranked 2nd in 2022, second only to the Cancer Hospital, and ranked 1st among general hospitals. In the national research competitiveness ranking in oncology, it ranked 9th. The Department of Oncology has 42 approved beds (38 in the East Campus + 4 in the South Campus), 23 physicians, and 23 nurses. The physicians are distributed across Renji East Campus and South Campus; Punan, Baoshan, Ningbo, and Nantong Branch Hospitals. Among the physicians, 13 are Party members (59%), 12 have senior professional titles (55%), and 19 hold doctoral degrees (86%). Under the leadership of the current department head, Director Xiao Xiuying, the Department of Oncology provides full lifecycle management for patients with various solid tumors, delivering individualized, standardized, and precision-based comprehensive treatment. It also performs minimally invasive tumor biopsy, hyperthermia, irreversible electroporation ablation (nanoknife ablation), and implantation and maintenance of implantable venous access ports (PORT). It has also become a national base for oncology drug clinical trials and undertakes multiple clinical studies of new oncology drugs each year. A total of 15 clinical research projects have been conducted, 13 have been completed, and 8 projects are pending initiation, including 7 led by the department, 2 international multicenter trials, and 12 domestic multicenter trials. In 2023, the department obtained 5 National Natural Science Foundation of China grants, won the First Prize of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award, and received 1 project from the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission. It published 16 SCI papers as first author or corresponding author. The department is the lead unit of the oncology specialist physician training expert group of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and a Shanghai training base for medical oncology and oncology specialist standardized training. It undertakes oncology teaching tasks for the Shanghai-Ottawa Joint Medical College and the eight-year program of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. In 2023, 2 people received the hospital's advanced individual award for teaching work; 6 people won first, second, and third prizes and the Top Ten Demonstration Lesson Plans award in the case competition of Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The department is currently the chair unit of the Pancreatic Cancer Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology, the lead unit of the Pancreatic Oncology Group of the Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a member unit of the Integrated Oncology Nephrology Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, the vice-chair unit of the Oncology Specialist Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association, and a member unit of the Difficult Tumor Professional Committee of the Shanghai Anti-Cancer Association. The Department of Oncology will focus on the specialization and refinement of disciplinary development, build a clinical medical and academic team with complete specialties, distinctive features, a full talent echelon, effective management, and comprehensive development in medical care, teaching, and research, further enhance its domestic influence and international visibility, and lay the foundation for the discipline to rank among first-class international disciplines.
