Department of Hematology, Renji Hospital, since its establishment in 1963 by Professors Pan Ruipeng and Ouyang Renrong, pioneers in China's hematology field, has undergone over half a century of accumulation and development and has become a significant force in the field of hematologic disease diagnosis and treatment in China. Under the leadership of the current department director, Professor Du Juan, the discipline has always stood at the forefront of academia, dedicated to providing precise and efficient medical services for patients with hematologic diseases. The Department of Hematology at Renji Hospital is currently a Shanghai Branch of the National Clinical Research Center for Hematologic Diseases, the leading unit of the Hematology Rehabilitation Committee of the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, a member unit of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EMBT), a Shanghai branch of the China Marrow Donor Program, a hospital for hematopoietic stem cell collection and transplantation, a member unit of the Shanghai Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Alliance, and a Lymphoma Science Popularization Education Base of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association. Medical Strength The Department of Hematology at Renji Hospital possesses a strong medical team and advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities. The disciplinary team consists of 63 members, including 23 physicians, 2 full-time research personnel, 7 medical technicians, and 31 nurses, among whom 13 hold senior professional titles. The discipline has established sub-specialty groups for myeloma, lymphoma, leukemia, and hematologic laboratory diagnostics, providing comprehensive and specialized diagnostic and treatment services for patients. Meanwhile, the discipline has wards in the East Campus, South Campus, Punan Branch, and Hangzhou Bay Hospital, with 118 authorized beds and 4 hundred-grade sterile laminar flow rooms, and is equipped with advanced laboratory facilities such as the blood cell laboratory and leukemia research laboratory, providing strong support for precise diagnosis and treatment of diseases. In 2023, the East and South Campus wards admitted nearly 7,000 patient visits, with annual outpatient visits exceeding 40,000. In the 2023 Shanghai municipal hospital specialty and disease statistics, the discharge cases for myeloma and acute leukemia ranked third in the city, and lymphoma ranked fifth in the city, fully demonstrating its leading position in the field of hematologic diseases. Medical Features The Department of Hematology at Renji Hospital has accumulated rich experience in the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic malignancies including myeloma, lymphoma, acute/chronic leukemia, as well as other common hematologic diseases such as various types of anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, immune thrombocytopenia, myeloproliferative neoplasms, and coagulation disorders. Since the establishment of the lymphoma diagnosis and treatment discipline group in 2010, the Department of Hematology at Renji Hospital has collaborated with a multidisciplinary team (MDT) to commit to the full-process management of standardized and individualized diagnosis and treatment of hematologic malignancies. Currently, laboratory tests in cytology, immunology, molecular biology, and other fields have been carried out, establishing precise diagnosis and prognostic stratification for patients with hematologic malignancies from multiple dimensions including genes, proteins, cells, and organs; and various advanced treatment technologies such as tumor chemotherapy, immunotargeted therapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and novel cellular immunotherapy have been carried out. Under the leadership of Professor Du Juan, the discipline has reached an internationally advanced level in the diagnosis and treatment of multiple myeloma. In addition, the Department of Hematology at Renji Hospital has participated in the compilation and revision of multiple international and domestic guidelines and expert consensus for the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic malignancies, making positive contributions to promoting the development of hematologic disease diagnosis and treatment in China. Teaching Heritage The Department of Hematology at Renji Hospital has long undertaken clinical teaching and training for undergraduate and graduate students, standardized residency training, and visiting physicians at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. It has an excellent faculty team, including 1 doctoral supervisor and 6 master's supervisors. They are dedicated to cultivating a new generation of hematology medical talents, injecting new vitality into the sustainable development of the discipline. Professor Hou Jian, as the principal investigator, has led the completion of multiple international and domestic multicenter clinical studies on new drugs for multiple myeloma. These studies have not only enhanced the academic status of the discipline but also brought new hope for the treatment of patients with hematologic diseases. At the same time, the research achievements of the discipline have won multiple honors including the Second Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, the Ministry of Health Science and Technology Achievement Award, and various science and technology achievement awards in Shanghai.
