The Department of Gastroenterology at Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was founded in 1984 by Academician Jiang Shaoji and Professor Xiao Shudong. It is one of the major medical, research, and teaching bases for gastroenterology in China. The discipline is a national (Ministry of Education) key discipline, a Shanghai Municipal Government key discipline, the Shanghai Municipal Clinical Medical Center for Gastroenterology, the Shanghai Municipal Clinical Quality Control Center for Gastroenterology, and the National Health Commission Key Laboratory of Gastroenterology. In 2011, it was ranked No. 1 nationwide in the Ministry of Health evaluation and entered the "National Clinical Key Specialty" program, and was ranked No. 2 in entering the "National Clinical Key Specialty (Ministry of Health Key Laboratory)" construction program. In the same year, the discipline became one of the first batch of Shanghai's top-priority clinical medical centers. The Department of Gastroenterology at Renji Hospital has been ranked first in the gastroenterology specialty category of the Chinese Hospital Best Specialty Reputation Rankings for four consecutive years. The Department of Gastroenterology at Renji Hospital (East, West, and South campuses) has 166 inpatient beds, a 4,600-square-meter clinical endoscopy center, and 1,600 square meters of laboratory space, with comprehensive and advanced basic and clinical research equipment. In recent years, the annual outpatient volume has exceeded 700,000 visits, consistently ranking first nationwide. It gathers patients with complex and critical diseases from all over the country, forming a series of clinical diagnostic and treatment specialties including gastrointestinal tumors and precancerous diseases, chronic liver diseases (autoimmune liver disease, drug-induced liver disease, fatty liver disease, and severe liver disease), Helicobacter pylori and related diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, psychosomatic disorders of the digestive system, small intestinal bleeding, and endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of early cancer. The annual endoscopic diagnosis and treatment volume exceeds 260,000 cases, carrying out examinations and minimally invasive treatments including capsule endoscopy, enteroscopy, narrow-band imaging and chromoendoscopy, magnifying endoscopy, confocal laser endomicroscopy, autofluorescence endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, endoscopic mucosal resection techniques (EMR, ESD, POEM), digestive tract stricture dilation and stent placement, and endoscopic treatment of esophagogastric varices, making it one of the institutions with the most comprehensive endoscopic diagnosis and treatment programs in the country. The gastroenterology staff at Renji not only practice the mission of benevolence in healing and saving lives, but have also written Renji's experience into Chinese and global health history. The discipline currently has 1 chair professor, 3 national-level high-level talents, 13 doctoral supervisors, and 18 master's supervisors. Over the years, it has received more than 200 National Natural Science Foundation projects, published more than 500 SCI papers, won 4 National Science and Technology Progress Awards as the first completing institution, and approximately 30 provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards. The discipline has led the formulation and writing of multiple clinical guidelines and expert consensus documents in the field of digestive diseases, including the "Consensus Opinion on Chronic Gastritis in China," "Consensus Opinion on Colorectal Cancer Prevention in China," "Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Autoimmune Hepatitis," "Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Drug-Induced Liver Injury," "Diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Consensus Treatment Opinions," "Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines for Helicobacter pylori," and others. The discipline not only has a leading advantage domestically but also enjoys high academic status and influence internationally. The quadruple therapy pioneered by the discipline in the field of Helicobacter pylori became the only treatment regimen from China included in international guidelines; the pioneering use of thalidomide for the treatment of small intestinal angiodysplasia bleeding was strongly recommended by the American College of Gastroenterology international guidelines; and the research on diagnostic criteria for autoimmune liver disease conducted by the discipline has been cited and promoted by international guidelines. The Department of Gastroenterology at Renji Hospital has always been committed to promoting the growth of primary care specialists and improving medical standards, achieving homogeneity in clinical diagnosis and treatment. The discipline has held more than 20 continuing education training courses, including "Intestinal Homeostasis Imbalance and Colorectal Cancer," "Training Course on Progress in Diagnosis and Treatment of Autoimmune Liver Disease," "Advanced Training Course on Diagnosis and Treatment of Early Gastrointestinal Cancer," "Advanced Seminar on Basic Research and New Clinical Technologies for Inflammatory Bowel Disease," "Progress in Diagnosis and Treatment Research of Chronic Gastritis," "Key Technologies for Clinical Diagnosis, Treatment, and Health Management of Non-Viral Liver Disease," and others, training more than one hundred gastroenterology specialists annually for the entire country, greatly enhancing the comprehensive clinical diagnostic and treatment capabilities of primary care specialists and better serving the vast number of patients.
