The General Practice Medical Education Base of Renji Hospital was established in 2006 and is one of the first three clinical bases for standardized training of general practitioners in Shanghai. Since April 2019, the hospital has independently established the Department of General Practice, which currently has 11 physicians, including 5 with associate senior titles or above. The department currently operates general practice wards in two campuses and offers multiple outpatient services, including general practice clinics, polypharmacy specialty clinics, and chronic disease comprehensive specialty clinics. It emphasizes the "patient-centered" and "biopsychosocial" medical model, serving as a health gatekeeper. It addresses patients' challenges such as "not knowing which department to register with, unclear etiology, multimorbidity, and polypharmacy." It provides initial consultation and hierarchical diagnosis and treatment for undifferentiated diseases with unknown etiology, comprehensive management for common and frequently occurring chronic diseases such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, osteoporosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as various health consultations and medical care. The department also leverages the resource advantages and leading role of a municipal tertiary hospital to "channel high-quality medical resources downward" and "elevate primary care capabilities," meeting the public's demand for nearby medical care. Together with Punan Branch, it has built a tightly integrated medical consortium, established a general practice department at Punan Branch, and through the launch of "dual contracting" and the "Shanghai General Practice Medical Education and Training Center Network Base," carried out school-hospital-region collaboration to enhance primary community health service capabilities, extending the reach of Renji's high-quality medical resources to the grassroots level and meeting the multi-level medical and health service needs of community residents. In undergraduate, standardized residency training, graduate, and continuing education training, the department's teaching team has received multiple grants including national and municipal first-class courses and post-graduation education projects, and has won awards in municipal competitions for simulation teaching, CBL, PBL, and curriculum ideological-political design projects. Department members have successively received support from the Pujiang Talent Program, the Shanghai Higher Education Teacher Training Program, and the Shanghai Medical New Star Program. The general practice community teaching bases are located at three community health service centers in Weifang, Huamu, and Tangqiao in Pudong New Area, among which Weifang and Huamu Community Health Service Centers were awarded the first batch of Shanghai Demonstration Community Teaching Bases for Standardized Residency Training in 2021. Since the establishment of the base, it has trained more than 200 general practitioners, continuously supplying community medical institutions with batches of general practice talents who have a strong sense of social responsibility, excellent skills, noble medical ethics, and comprehensive qualities.
