The Department of Urology at Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, has a long history and profound heritage. In the 1950s, through the unremitting efforts of Professor Chen Bangdian and Professor Wang Yijing, the first generation of urologists in China, the prototype of the Department of Urology at Renji Hospital gradually took shape; Professor Jiang Yu established an independent Department of Urology at Renji Hospital in the late 1960s. Under the leadership of successive department heads, including Professor Jiang Yu, Professor Wu Jiajun, and Professor Wang Yixin, the department gradually matured. After entering the 21st century, under the leadership of Professor Huang Yiran and the current department head, Professor Xue Wei, the department achieved leapfrog development. In 2022, Renji Urology decisively stepped out of its "comfort zone" and gradually shifted its work center to the old hospital campus on the west bank of the Huangpu River. "Moving west" became a new starting point for Renji Urology's second entrepreneurial endeavor. "Renji Urology" is currently a National Health Commission key clinical specialty, a key construction discipline of the Ministry of Education's Project 211, a key discipline of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the affiliated unit of Shanghai's only urology clinical quality control center, a leading department in the national strategy for integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta, and the presiding unit of the Yangtze River Delta Urology Alliance. The department has under it the Shanghai Institute of Andrology and the editorial office of the Chinese Journal of Andrology. In the Fudan University ranking of distinctive specialties of Chinese hospitals and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences ranking of scientific and technological influence of Chinese hospitals, Renji Urology has consistently ranked among the top in the country. The discipline is large in scale, with 238 open beds, and currently has the most comprehensive subspecialty setup in urology in China, including 10 major subspecialties: kidney tumors, prostate tumors, bladder tumors, urinary tract stones, andrology, voiding dysfunction, urological reconstruction, pediatric urology, kidney transplantation, and urological emergencies. In recent years, the volume of the department's clinical work has shown a steady upward trend year by year. In 2023, the total number of outpatient and emergency visits was nearly 446,000, and the total number of surgeries reached 27,000, with various medical indicators continuously improving. According to statistics on the diagnosis and treatment of key diseases in Shanghai, the surgical volume for kidney tumors and bladder tumors has ranked first in Shanghai for 5 consecutive years, and the surgical volume for prostate tumors has also remained among the top two in the city. The volume of da Vinci robotic surgeries ranks first in the country. In terms of scientific research, "Renji Urology," on the one hand, cooperates with top international and domestic scientists, and on the other hand, focuses on strengthening the construction of disciplinary laboratories, achieving a series of original results. In the past 5 years, it has undertaken 52 national and provincial/ministerial-level scientific research projects related to urological tumors, including National Natural Science Foundation key instrument projects and key projects of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission; related research results have been published in 258 SCI papers in international flagship academic journals such as Nat Cancer, Nat Commun, and J Clin Invest; and it has served as editor-in-chief or associate editor-in-chief for 7 monographs on urological tumors. It has received a series of awards, including the First Prize of the Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award of Higher Education Institutions, the First Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, and the First Prize of the Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award. At the same time, a rigorous training system for young physicians has cultivated a group of clinician-scientists with international vision, injecting vitality into the sustainable development of the discipline. The discipline also maintains long-term and in-depth cooperation and exchanges with globally renowned medical centers or urology departments such as the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Mayo Clinic in the United States. In the future, "Renji Urology" will continue to take high-quality clinical services as its development focus, clinical research and translational research as its academic support, disciplinary backbone members as its core, and subspecialties as its framework, continuously improving its internal structure, introducing advanced technologies and advanced methods, daring to innovate, and being brave in experimentation, striving to become a world-class international diagnosis and treatment center for urology.
