The Department of Stomatology at Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, has a long history and is a core institution officially designated by the National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases. Renji Hospital established a dental department in the 1930s, which was renamed the Department of Stomatology after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The Department of Stomatology at Renji Hospital was first headed by Professor Huang Xizhang, and subsequently grew and developed under the leadership of department heads including Xu Yuying, Wang Pinzhen, Lu Qun, Yu Li, and Lu Eryi. With general dentistry as its platform and optimized service as its purpose, the department implements a tiered diagnosis and treatment system; following a one-stop, holistic design concept, it has established a multidisciplinary high-end oral diagnosis and treatment center featuring implantology and prosthodontics. The Department of Stomatology at Renji Hospital has outpatient clinics in the East, West, and South campuses. After renovation and expansion, the East Campus has a usable area of over 1,000 m², with 45 dental chairs, 7 special-needs treatment rooms, and 2 outpatient implant surgery rooms. It is equipped with advanced devices and instruments including a CAD/CAM chairside operating system, oral laser therapeutic apparatus, microscopic endodontic treatment unit, ultrasonic bone scalpel, and high-frequency electrosurgical unit. It provides medical services across multiple subspecialties including oral implantology, prosthodontics, alveolar surgery, orthodontics, periodontology, endodontics, and oral mucosal diseases. It comprehensively carries out procedures such as 3D printing, immediate and delayed implant-supported fixed or removable restorations, GBR techniques, CAD/CAM all-ceramic crowns, veneers, post-and-core crowns, inlays, titanium alloy removable dentures, BPS complete dentures, removable or fixed occlusal reconstruction, post-orthodontic or post-periodontal prosthetic restoration, and combined implant-orthodontic restoration. Since 2017, under the leadership of Director Lu Eryi, the department team has continued to grow, with improved management structure and faculty composition. The department trains eight-year and seven-year program students in clinical stomatology as well as master's and doctoral graduate students, undertakes lecture-based teaching for undergraduates at Renji Medical College and training of visiting physicians, and serves as a clinical practice base for the Dental Technology program at Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences. Multiple physicians have visited medical schools, laboratories, and dental laboratories in the United States, Germany, Japan, and other countries for exchange and study. They hold positions as vice chairpersons, standing committee members, committee members, and youth committee members in multiple academic societies, including the Continuing Education Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Shanghai Stomatological Association and its various subspecialties, the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association and its subspecialties, and the Oral Medicine Branch of the Bethune Spirit Research Association. Clinical diagnosis and treatment and basic research are organically integrated and mutually reinforcing, with scientific theory guiding the development of the discipline. 【Specialty Features】 Implantology Specialty: Renji Stomatology began implant-supported denture restoration in 1998 and was one of the first oral institutions in China to carry out this procedure. It has extensive clinical experience in implant soft tissue esthetic management and esthetic restoration techniques, bone augmentation and implant techniques for insufficient bone volume, maxillary sinus floor elevation and implant techniques, and implant overdenture restoration. Prosthodontics Specialty: Provides restorative treatment for tooth and dentition defects and missing teeth, including various fixed restorations (all-ceramic crown and bridge restorations, porcelain veneer restorations, etc.), removable restorations (framed removable partial dentures, flexible dentures, complete dentures, etc.), implant restorations, and combined fixed-removable restoration techniques (precision attachment dentures, magnetic retention dentures, telescopic crown dentures, etc.). Alveolar Surgery Specialty: Focuses primarily on various tooth extraction procedures, alveolar surgical procedures, jaw cysts, benign soft tissue tumors of the maxillofacial region, maxillofacial soft tissue trauma, dental trauma, and oral infections. It also provides combined periodontal-endodontic treatment, combined periodontal-orthodontic treatment, and prosthetic treatment for periodontal disease. Endodontics Specialty: The scope of diagnosis and treatment includes caries and other dental hard tissue diseases, pulp diseases, periapical diseases, and various other endodontic conditions.
