The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of Renji Hospital was founded in 1953. It is a department with a profound heritage and a history of more than 70 years, integrating medical care, teaching, and research. It closely strengthens collaboration between the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and clinical departments, and actively carries out early bedside rehabilitation for critically ill and complex medical and surgical diseases in neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, intensive care medicine, geriatrics, and other internal and surgical specialties, as well as closely undertaking comprehensive rehabilitation treatment after patients are transferred to the rehabilitation ward. The rehabilitation outpatient clinic adopts an integrated working model combining exercise training and physical therapy for common clinical conditions such as neck, shoulder, waist, and leg pain. The annual outpatient volume reaches more than 36,000 visits, ranking among the top in rehabilitation outpatient volume in Shanghai, and the treatment results have received unanimous praise from patients. The successive directors of the department have served as vice chairman of the Chinese Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, chairman of the Shanghai Branch, vice president of the Shanghai Rehabilitation Medical Association, and other social positions. The current director of the department, Chief Physician Chen Zhen, professor and doctoral supervisor, is a discipline leader of Shanghai key medical specialty, a leading figure in Shanghai rehabilitation science and technology, vice chairman of the Critical Care Rehabilitation Professional Committee of the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, vice chairman of the Third Committee of the Rehabilitation Medicine Branch of the China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care, vice chairman of the Disorders of Consciousness Rehabilitation Professional Committee of the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, vice chairman of the Brain Function Detection and Regulation Professional Committee of the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, and chairman of the Critical Care Rehabilitation Committee of the Shanghai Rehabilitation Medical Association. He has presided over key research and development projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, projects of the Ministry of Health, international cooperation projects, and teaching projects. The department served as editor-in-chief of General Practice Rehabilitation Medicine, chief translator of China's first translated work on critical care rehabilitation, Sequelae and Rehabilitation Treatment After Intensive Care, and has served as editor-in-chief, chief translator, contributing editor, or contributing translator for more than 20 monographs, and has successfully hosted more than ten national-level continuing education project training classes. The department has established cooperative relationships with rehabilitation therapy professional colleges and universities such as Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai University of Sport, Tongji University, Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Shanghai Aurora College, and Shanghai Sanda University, jointly establishing observation and internship bases. In 2023, our department was officially awarded the plaque for the Organ and Critical Care Rehabilitation Research Center of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and CPIC Rehabilitation Research Institute. At present, it mainly carries out comprehensive rehabilitation medical work in critical care rehabilitation and organ rehabilitation, neurological diseases, geriatric diseases, post-breast surgery, perioperative orthopedics, and sports injuries, providing comprehensive rehabilitation treatment including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and swallowing dysfunction therapy. The patients treated include those from all over the country and those from other countries and regions around the world who come specifically for treatment. The department has a relatively complete range of rehabilitation equipment and instruments. The rehabilitation business covers the following areas: critical care rehabilitation and organ rehabilitation, stroke and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, perioperative breast cancer and lymphedema rehabilitation, acute and chronic injury and pain rehabilitation, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, peripheral nerve injury rehabilitation, osteoporosis rehabilitation, cervical/lumbar intervertebral disc disease rehabilitation, frozen shoulder and rotator cuff injury rehabilitation, rehabilitation after artificial joint replacement, rehabilitation after fracture surgery, and perioperative respiratory function rehabilitation.
