The Department of Pathology at Renji Hospital was founded in 1950 and is one of the earliest hospitals in Shanghai to carry out clinical pathological diagnosis. With the support and guidance of hospital leaders at all levels, and through the efforts of several generations, the department team has continued to grow and develop. By 2024, it has grown into a professional team with 26 diagnostic physicians and 26 technical personnel, with a total working area of approximately 2,000 square meters across the East, West, and South campuses. It has established a network pathology collaboration platform with branch hospitals in multiple regions such as Ningbo Hangzhou Bay and Wuxi, covering histopathology, cytopathology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular pathology, integrating medical care, education, and research. [Personnel Composition] All diagnostic physicians in the Department of Pathology hold a master's degree or above, among whom 9 hold doctoral degrees. In addition, there is 1 full-time doctoral bioinformatics analyst and 1 doctoral project leader for LDT projects. Including the current department director Professor Cao Dengfeng, deputy directors Professor Liu Zebing and Associate Professor He Yamin, and former directors Professors Zhu Jianshan and Liu Qiang, there are 7 senior professional titles and 2 doctoral supervisors. In 2024, there are 5 trainees receiving clinical pathology specialty base training in the Department of Pathology, 5 physicians undergoing standardized residency training in the pathology base, and 3 graduate students. In the technical group, there are 2 supervising technologists, Chen Yiming and Xuan Beilei. [Routine Work and Immunohistochemistry] The annual volume of external examinations in the Department of Pathology at Renji Hospital exceeds 100,000 cases (excluding small specimens from digestive endoscopy, 2023), with over 1,000 intraoperative frozen sections (2023) and more than 3,000 consultation cases (2023). Immunohistochemistry testing is equipped with advanced detection platforms such as DAKO, Leica, and Roche, with an annual testing volume of over 28,000 cases (2023) and more than 100 testing items; cytopathological diagnosis exceeds 120,000 cases (2023), including gynecological TCT and non-gynecological TCT testing items such as urine. The strong clinical disciplines at Renji Hospital provide abundant specimens of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions, especially in the fields of hepatobiliary and pancreatic, urogenital and male reproductive systems, female reproductive system, gastrointestinal, breast, thoracic surgery, head and neck, soft tissue and lymphohematopoietic systems, and liver transplantation. Senior physicians all have their own subspecialty pathology directions and rich diagnostic experience, and participate in dozens of multidisciplinary treatment conferences (MDT) at the hospital, playing the role of pathological diagnosis as the gold standard for disease, especially tumor diagnosis, safeguarding precision medicine. [Molecular Pathology] The Department of Pathology has 2 clinical PCR laboratories approved by the Shanghai Clinical Testing Center, strictly implementing the work and management standards of clinical gene amplification laboratories. It is equipped with detection platforms such as fluorescence in situ hybridization/FISH, PCR, Sanger sequencing, and next-generation sequencing/NGS. The NGS platform is equipped with a total of 3 sequencers including Illumina MiSeq DX, NextSeq 550DX, and Thermo S5DX, as well as 2 Agilent automated library preparation instruments. At present, multiple molecular pathology testing projects for pathological diagnosis and targeted therapy have been carried out, and single-gene and multi-gene variant combined testing can be carried out for tissue or liquid biopsy specimens of lung cancer, colorectal cancer, lymphoma/leukemia, etc., achieving full coverage of clinical needs. A standardized in-hospital testing process has been established, which can meet all tumor-related clinical testing needs based on tissue samples and liquid biopsy samples. Since the projects were launched in the hospital, they have been widely recognized by various clinical departments. [Teaching and Research Work] The Department of Pathology became one of the first batch of residency training bases in Shanghai in 2010, and became one of the first batch of clinical pathology specialty training bases in Shanghai in 2014 (with a urogenital and male reproductive subspecialty established). The department undertakes clinical pathology teaching work for trainees from different sources, including rotating physicians from various bases, interns from various departments, and graduate students in the department, including 1 graduate student (including four certificates) per year, 2-3 base physicians per year, and dozens of rotating physicians. Base physicians implement a mentorship system, with senior physicians designated for one-on-one mentoring. The faculty is strong, and the teaching echelon is well-established; the department has advanced instruments and equipment and possesses various current new pathology technologies, building a good platform for medical care, teaching, and research for the training of base residents. Feedback and communication channels for base residents have been established, as well as a complete assessment and evaluation system to encourage residents to better complete their studies. In addition, the Department of Pathology has 1 pathology doctoral supervisor from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and 1 clinical pathology master's supervisor, with 3 graduate students currently enrolled. In recent years, the department has obtained 2 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 2 Natural Science Foundation projects from the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, and 1 "Double Hundred People" project for research-oriented physicians from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. It has published multiple high-level SCI papers in journals such as Mol Cancer, J Clin Pathol, and Cancer, and has published a series of articles in well-known domestic journals such as Chinese Journal of Pathology and Chinese Journal of Transplantation. Over the years, it has been invited multiple times to participate in important domestic and international academic conferences such as the USCAP Annual Meeting and the Chinese Medical Association Pathology Annual Meeting.
