Introduction to the Department of Blood Transfusion, Peking University Third Hospital The Department of Blood Transfusion at Peking University Third Hospital was established in 2006. Since its inception, the department has strictly adhered to the requirements of the *Blood Donation Law of the People's Republic of China*, the *Measures for the Management of Clinical Blood Use in Medical Institutions*, the *Technical Specifications for Clinical Blood Transfusion*, the *Standards for Transfusion Compatibility Testing*, the *Guidelines for Perioperative Patient Blood Management*, and the *Guidelines for Pediatric Blood Transfusion*, with a focus on capacity building in transfusion services. The department actively promotes component transfusion and autologous blood transfusion in clinical settings, strictly manages clinical transfusion indications, and has gradually developed a transfusion workflow tailored to the hospital's actual circumstances. Comprehensive departmental regulations, contingency plans, and emergency blood supply assurance procedures have been progressively established to ensure the safety of clinical blood use. On the basis of strictly completing routine transfusion compatibility testing in accordance with relevant regulations, the department reviews clinical blood use, actively guides and supervises rational clinical transfusion practices, and strengthens clinicians' awareness of transfusion-related risk prevention. The department consistently upholds a patient-centered approach and the principle of dedicated clinical service, fostering collaboration to ensure the availability of blood for clinical needs. In recent years, the department has strengthened patient blood management (PBM), with the Transfusion Management Committee overseeing the entire transfusion process, including transfusion appropriateness, transfusion practices, blood specimen collection and transportation, pre-transfusion testing, transfusion adverse reactions, transfusion adverse events, and transfusion efficacy assessment. Regular updates to transfusion guidelines have also been incorporated into routine work plans. Additionally, patient blood management is supported through an intelligent transfusion system. In terms of laboratory techniques, the department has implemented blood group typing, antibody screening, antibody identification, neonatal hemolytic disease testing, and complex cross-matching. In transfusion therapy, the department has introduced platelet-rich plasma therapy and pre-admission storage autologous blood collection. Regarding information systems, in addition to the conventional transfusion management information system, the hospital utilizes an intelligent transfusion system to enhance clinical awareness of restrictive transfusion practices, improve communication between clinical departments and the transfusion department, and automatically notify the transfusion department of treatments or conditions that may affect pre-transfusion testing, such as transplant patients, patients undergoing plasma exchange, and those receiving special medications. In personnel training, the department actively conducts training on transfusion-related key points, including transfusion testing techniques, updates to transfusion guidelines, transfusion adverse events, transfusion procedure training, assessment and processes for preoperative autologous blood storage, and the application of the intelligent transfusion system. In future work, the department will gradually evolve into a "Department of Transfusion Medicine" integrating transfusion technology with transfusion therapy.
