The Department of Laboratory Medicine at Peking University Third Hospital was established in 1958. In 1986, the department was approved as a master's degree granting program in Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics. In 2006, it was accredited as a standardized residency training base by the National Health Commission and the Beijing Municipal Government. In 2007, it was granted the authority to confer doctoral degrees. In 2008, it passed ISO 15189 accreditation. In 2010, it was among the first batch of National Key Clinical Specialty Construction Projects. In 2017, it ranked 5th in the North China Regional Hospital Specialty Reputation Ranking of the Fudan Hospital Ranking. In 2020, it was selected as one of the first batch of Beijing Key Specialty Excellence Projects. In 2021, it became one of the first core units of the National Medical Laboratory Clinical Medical Research Center and a standardized fellowship training base of Peking University. The department currently comprises professional groups in Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Hematology and Body Fluids, Clinical Microbiology, and Clinical Molecular Biology. We offer over 500 testing items, including autoantibodies, allergens, trace elements, infection immunology, tumor markers, hormones, flow cytometry, platelet aggregation function, thromboelastography, coagulation factors, bacteria and fungi, nucleic acid testing and genotyping, and toxicology analysis, covering multiple fields related to various diseases. The department is equipped with comprehensive state-of-the-art instruments and automated lines, including fully automated biochemical analyzers, fully automated immunoassay analyzers, fully automated hematology analyzers, fully automated coagulation analyzers, fully automated urine analyzers, high-throughput bacterial identification systems, biochip detection systems, real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR instruments, and mass spectrometers. All testing items and platforms are managed under fully informatized systems, ensuring the quality and efficiency of services for both patients and clinical departments. As one of the key specialties of Peking University Third Hospital, the department has achieved steady progress in clinical service, education, and research under the relentless efforts of successive directors. Many aspects have reached advanced domestic levels, with some areas approaching internationally advanced standards. The department's workforce has continued to grow and currently comprises 103 staff members, including 13 with senior professional titles, 40 with intermediate professional titles, 30 with master's or doctoral degrees, 40 with bachelor's degrees, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 3 master's supervisors. The staffing level fully meets clinical demands and departmental development needs, with a well-structured age distribution across senior, middle-aged, and young professionals. As the backbone of disciplinary development, the department's young core members complement each other's expertise, each with distinct strengths, and collaborate effectively. They hold academic appointments in national and Beijing-level societies, have delivered invited presentations at numerous national and Beijing-level conferences on laboratory medicine, and possess considerable academic influence. In terms of research, the department has established stable, well-defined research directions with distinctive features of laboratory medicine. Since 2016, it has undertaken over 50 research projects of various types, including 15 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (as principal investigator), 2 sub-projects of major national programs under the Ministry of Science and Technology, 3 projects funded by the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, and 2 Capital Clinical Application Research projects. The department has been granted multiple invention patents and has published over 120 high-quality papers, including more than 80 indexed in SCI. For over six decades of fruitful endeavors, the laboratory professionals of PUTH have always harbored the aspiration for the prosperity and advancement of laboratory medicine. With unwavering determination and collective dedication, they have forged ahead, fulfilling the solemn mission of serving the people's health. For over six decades of journey through trials and tribulations, under the leadership of the hospital, the Party branch, and the departmental core leadership team, the department has continuously improved its quality management system, vigorously enhanced testing capabilities, and elevated the quality and speed of services to clinical departments, providing solid support for the hospital's high-quality development. Years of accumulation and fine traditions have rendered every step we take firm and solid.
