The Department of Stomatology at Peking University Third Hospital was established in 1958, at the very beginning of the hospital's founding. At its inception, the department had only three dental units and a handful of medical staff. After nearly 70 years of development and the concerted efforts of several generations within the department, it has now evolved into a modern department with complete specialties including Oral Medicine (Cariology and Endodontics, Periodontology, Oral Medicine, Pediatric Dentistry, and Preventive Dentistry), Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Radiology, and Oral Implantology, placing equal emphasis on clinical service, education, and research, and featuring a well-structured talent pipeline. Department Overview The Department of Stomatology at PUTH currently comprises five divisions: the Main Hospital, the Airport Campus Branch, the North Campus Branch, the Party School Campus Branch, and the Second Outpatient Clinic Branch, with a total of 95 dental units. Among these, the Main Hospital houses 57 dental units, distributed across the second-floor clinic area of the ENT/Ophthalmology Building, the ninth-floor clinic area, and the VIP clinic area, and also offers international medical services. The Airport Campus Branch is equipped with 10 dental units, and the North Campus Branch has 18 dental units. The department is equipped with 5 advanced dental cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) machines, nearly 10 digital dental imaging devices including digital intraoral radiography and digital panoramic radiography systems, over 20 dental operating microscopes, multiple sets of digital dental equipment, comprehensive and advanced sterilization facilities, and a leading domestic departmental information management system. In addition to general consultation rooms, the department has established specialized clinics, isolation rooms, and independent operating rooms to individually meet diagnostic and treatment needs. The advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and hardware configuration not only effectively improve medical quality and efficiency but also lay a solid foundation for the department's further development. Personnel Structure and Scope of Diagnosis and Treatment Through decades of dedicated development, the Department of Stomatology at PUTH has now formed a medical team with a rational structure and superb skills, emphasizing both specialization and general practice. The department currently has nearly 180 medical, nursing, and technical staff, with approximately 90 physicians and 90 nurses. Among the physician team, there are nearly 20 senior-title physicians, over 40 mid-title physicians, and nearly 30 junior-title physicians, who respectively undertake dental diagnosis and treatment ranging from specialist to general practice, covering routine basic cases and various complex and difficult cases. The department has established multiple subspecialties, including Oral Medicine (Cariology and Endodontics, Periodontology, Oral Medicine, Pediatric Dentistry, and Preventive Dentistry), Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, and Oral Implantology. The overall talent structure of the department is scientifically configured with a well-established system. This tiered, graded, and collaboratively organized diagnostic and treatment system and specialty configuration model ensure the standardization and continuity of medical services, enabling both common diseases and difficult cases to receive appropriate diagnosis and treatment at the corresponding level, thereby providing patients with comprehensive and high-quality medical services. Departmental Strengths and Characteristics Adhering to the fine tradition of the Peking University Health Science Center of "Diligence, Rigor, Pragmatism, and Innovation," and the service tenet of PUTH of "Patients First," the department has always upheld the service philosophy of "patient-centered care." It closely tracks the latest advances in domestic and international stomatology, continuously introduces new technologies and therapies, and adopts quality control standards equivalent to those of the Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology to strictly monitor medical quality. Fees are charged in an open, transparent, and standardized manner in strict accordance with the fee standards promulgated by the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, providing patients with high-level medical services. Our department possesses high-level diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities across all professional fields of stomatology and can complete various complex treatment projects with high quality, forming significant professional advantages: In the field of Cariology and Endodontics, nickel-titanium rotary instrument root canal therapy is widely performed, and microscope-assisted endodontic treatment and micro-endodontic surgery are implemented with the aid of dental operating microscopes, significantly improving the treatment outcomes of difficult pulp diseases. In the field of Periodontology, standardized periodontal basic therapy is carried out, along with the extensive performance of various periodontal surgical treatments and peri-implant maintenance, providing strong support for patients' lifelong oral health management and the long-term stability of other specialty treatment outcomes. In the field of Prosthodontics, our department has mastered various advanced restorative methods, including precision casting technology and precision attachment-based prosthodontics. In the field of Implantology and implant prosthodontics, digital technology is deeply integrated; through intraoral scanning and the design and printing of surgical guides, precise planning of implant surgery and efficient fabrication of prostheses are achieved, significantly enhancing treatment predictability and patient experience. In the Orthodontics specialty, the department not only focuses on the systematic correction of various malocclusions in both adults and children, with mature temporary anchorage device-assisted treatment techniques, but also extensively applies digital methods to assist treatment. Meanwhile, the department has long adopted a one-doctor-one-nurse nursing collaboration model (four-handed dentistry), greatly improving work efficiency. In terms of influence within professional academic organizations, our department has always attached great importance to the promotion and practice of the multidisciplinary comprehensive dental treatment model. In 2008, it took the lead, together with the Department of Stomatology of the PLA General Hospital and several other influential general hospital dental departments nationwide, to jointly propose and actively prepare for the establishment of the Society of General Dentistry, Chinese Stomatological Association. After the establishment of the society, our department served as the first chair unit of the Society of General Dentistry, Chinese Stomatological Association from 2009 to 2012, and again served as the fourth chair unit from 2018 to 2022. In addition, in 2024, our department became a member unit of the General Dentistry Specialty Alliance of the National Center for Stomatology. Currently, over 30 members of the department hold important academic positions in national or regional professional stomatological organizations, and several experts serve as editorial board members or young editorial board members of multiple core stomatological journals in China. In 2023, the department ranked 20th in the China Hospital Science and Technology Influence Ranking (Stomatology specialty). In terms of education and teaching, the department undertakes multi-level, multi-type talent cultivation tasks in stomatology and has a well-defined teaching organizational management structure. It primarily undertakes the teaching of the 6-year international student program in stomatology of Peking University Health Science Center, the stomatology teaching for the 8-year clinical medicine program of Peking University Health Science Center, continuing education for visiting physicians, and standardized residency training in stomatology. Our department has undertaken the standardized training for general dental residents since 1992, formerly under Beijing Medical University. In 2005, it became one of the first batch of specialized dental training bases in Beijing, and in 2015, it became one of the first batch of national standardized residency training bases for general dentistry designated by the National Health Commission. In terms of scientific research, our department has always emphasized the cultivation of research talent and the establishment of research platforms. To date, the department has successfully completed or is currently conducting multiple national and provincial/ministerial-level funded projects, including 3 National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Youth Projects, 1 Beijing Municipal Natural Science Foundation Youth Project, and 4 Beijing Municipal Natural Science Foundation Frontier Projects. Since 2012, the department has been qualified as a national drug clinical trial institution in the stomatology specialty, having undertaken over 20 drug clinical trial projects cumulatively, covering innovative drugs, medical devices, and other areas. Department members have published over one hundred papers cumulatively. In the field of intellectual property, departmental medical and nursing staff actively engage in applied technological innovation and have obtained over 40 national utility model patents, with some achievements gradually being translated into clinical application. Through the unremitting efforts and persistence of all departmental staff, our department's clinical volume has long ranked among the top of general hospital dental departments in Beijing over the past two decades, with an annual outpatient volume of over 200,000 visits, earning recognition from peers and widespread praise from patients. After nearly seventy years of arduous journey, the Department of Stomatology at PUTH has developed into one of the leading forces among general hospital dental departments nationwide and has become one of the model departments for general dental practice.
