Since its establishment in 1958, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Peking University Third Hospital (formerly Beijing Medical University Third Hospital), under the leadership of pioneering experts in obstetrics and gynecology such as Zhang Lizhu, has achieved through decades of continuous development a nationally advanced level in the diagnosis and treatment of assisted reproduction and gynecologic reproductive endocrinology, malignant tumors, perinatal care and high-risk pregnancy, perimenopause-related disorders, as well as in family planning, with certain aspects reaching internationally advanced standards. The department has also made outstanding achievements in teaching and scientific research. Notably, it was designated as a doctoral degree program site in 1986 and has since trained over 30 doctoral students; it was recognized as a key discipline by the State Education Commission in 1989 and as one of the first key disciplines under the 211 Project in 1995. Several faculty members have been honored with the title of Beijing Outstanding Teacher; the department has received numerous awards for scientific and technological progress at the national, ministerial, and municipal levels; and it has published several hundred papers in domestic and international academic journals. At present, the department has developed into a comprehensive discipline integrating clinical practice, teaching, and research in reproductive endocrinology, gynecology, obstetrics, and family planning, with nearly 90 inpatient beds, an annual outpatient volume exceeding 160,000, 30 chief and associate chief physicians (including professors and associate professors), and a total of over 150 medical and nursing staff (including nearly 20 with doctoral degrees and 8 with master's degrees).
