The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Peking University Third Hospital is a nationally renowned unit characterized by orthopedic and sports injury rehabilitation, with comprehensive development in neurological and critical care rehabilitation, integrating clinical practice, teaching, and research. The department adopts an integrated clinical-rehabilitation working model for treatment. Building on its strengths in orthopedic and sports injury rehabilitation, it has gradually developed into a comprehensive rehabilitation system encompassing bone and joint rehabilitation, sports injury rehabilitation, neurological rehabilitation, critical care rehabilitation, spinal and cord rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, critical care rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation, geriatric rehabilitation, obstetric rehabilitation, and oncological rehabilitation. The department handles over 40,000 outpatient visits annually, and its early neurological rehabilitation intervention rate ranks first among hospitals directly under the National Health Commission. Seizing opportunities and meeting historical challenges, the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at PUTH has become the National Center for Medical Quality Control in Rehabilitation Medicine, the Beijing Center for Rehabilitation Medical Quality Control and Improvement, a National Key Clinical Specialty (2013, 2022), a Key National Base for Standardized Residency Training, a Specialty Base for Rehabilitation Nursing under the Chinese Nursing Association, a degree-granting site for doctoral programs in Rehabilitation Medicine and Physiatry and in Rehabilitation Therapy at Peking University, the host unit of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Peking University, the host unit of the Rehabilitation Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the host unit of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Branch of the Chinese Medical Association (incoming chair), and the chair unit of the China Hospital Rehabilitation Medicine Consortium. The department currently has 50 beds and 89 staff members, including 4 chief physicians, 5 associate chief physicians, 6 attending physicians, 5 resident physicians; 9 supervising therapists, 35 therapists; 6 supervising nurses, and 14 nurses. Among them, Cui Guoqing serves as Director of the Beijing Rehabilitation Medical Quality Control and Improvement Center, founding Director of the Rehabilitation Medical Consortium of the Chinese Hospital Association, Chair of the Chinese Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Collaborative Group, founding Chair of the Shoulder and Elbow Branch of the Beijing Medical Association, Vice Chair of the Bone and Joint Professional Committee of the Beijing Rehabilitation Society, Vice Chair of the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Branch of the Beijing Sports Science Society, Standing Committee Member of the Sports Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and Chair of the Shoulder and Elbow Sports Medicine Rehabilitation Branch of the Chinese Medical Education Association. Zhou Mouwang serves as Director of the National Center for Medical Quality Control in Rehabilitation Medicine, President of the Rehabilitation Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and incoming Chair of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Yang Yanyan serves as Deputy Secretary-General of the Rehabilitation Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. Liu Nan serves as Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Liu Xiaoxuan serves as a member of the Peripheral Neuropathy Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Dai Hongle serves as a Standing Committee Member of the Rehabilitation Nursing Professional Committee of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medical Association. Wu Tongxuan serves as a Standing Committee Member of the Occupational Therapy Professional Committee of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medical Association. As the lead unit of the National Center for Medical Quality Control in Rehabilitation Medicine, the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Peking University Third Hospital is fully responsible for the standardization of rehabilitation medical quality nationwide and has established a quality control network covering the entire country. Sentinel hospitals have expanded from 162 to 562, covering 31 provincial-level administrative regions, promoting comprehensive coverage of quality control efforts. The Center has developed standards including the National Quality Control Indicators for Rehabilitation Medicine, promoting the standardization of rehabilitation services, and has published the authoritative National Medical Service and Quality Safety Report (Rehabilitation Medicine Section). Quality control research shows that the early rehabilitation intervention rate for key diseases nationwide has steadily improved, with relevant indicators increasing by 1%-2% annually. The "Early Rehabilitation Intervention Rate" improvement initiative led by the Center has been recognized by the National Health Commission and has resulted in the Guidelines for Improving Early Rehabilitation Intervention Rates in Hospitalized Patients. These practices have substantially enhanced the quality of rehabilitation services nationwide. The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at PUTH has achieved remarkable results in subspecialty development, forming a disciplinary system featuring bone and joint rehabilitation as its hallmark, with comprehensive development in neurological and critical care rehabilitation. The Bone and Joint Rehabilitation subspecialty pioneered the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) model in the perioperative period, serving over one hundred referred patients annually, and has been approved as a national pilot demonstration unit for ERAS in orthopedics, significantly improving postoperative recovery efficiency. The department was the first in China to implement the integrated orthopedic rehabilitation model, achieving seamless connection between treatment and rehabilitation. Through collaboration among orthopedic surgeons, rehabilitation physicians, and therapist teams, this model has established a perioperative rehabilitation system that significantly improves postoperative functional recovery, reduces complications and readmission rates. Research demonstrates that this model significantly reduces postoperative pain, accelerates functional recovery, and improves return-to-work rates. It has been promoted as a key component of the "Beijing Top Ten Diseases Science and Technology Program" and has been widely applied nationwide. Furthermore, the integrated orthopedic rehabilitation model has gradually expanded to other disciplines, forming the "Integrated Clinical-Rehabilitation" working model, providing an innovative paradigm for multidisciplinary collaboration. Currently, the department has established 12 early rehabilitation workstations, with a neurological rehabilitation intervention rate ranking first among hospitals directly under the National Health Commission, significantly improving patients' early functional recovery. In education, the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine has pioneered a multi-level, internationalized talent cultivation system. Through international collaborations such as the "Peking University-University of Southern California Joint Occupational Therapy Training Program," the department has cultivated a cohort of high-level rehabilitation specialists. Over the past three years, it has trained 9 doctoral students and 18 master's students, and has added 2 new academic leaders and 5 technical core personnel. The department completes more than 2 national-level training programs annually, forming a talent development model spanning from grassroots to advanced levels. Through innovative curriculum design, online teaching, and international exchange, it continuously promotes the quality of rehabilitation education, providing solid support for the development of China's rehabilitation field. Currently, it serves as a Key National Base for Standardized Residency Training, a Specialty Base for Rehabilitation Nursing under the Chinese Nursing Association, a degree-granting site for doctoral programs in Rehabilitation Medicine and Physiatry and in Rehabilitation Therapy at Peking University, and the host unit of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Peking University, establishing itself as a benchmark in domestic rehabilitation education.
