I. Department Introduction The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Ruijin Hospital began practicing modern rehabilitation medicine in 1991. It was founded by Professor Chen Junning from the Department of Neurology and Professor Yang Peijun from the Department of Orthopedics on the basis of the former Physiotherapy Department, and has been inherited and developed to the present by Director Lu Tingren and Director Xie Qing. It is one of the earliest established rehabilitation medicine specialty departments in China and is a primary clinical department integrating medical care, teaching, and research. The Ruijin Hospital Rehabilitation Department is a Shanghai Municipal Key Clinical Specialty, the chair unit of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, one of Shanghai's first standardized training and specialty physician training bases for rehabilitation physicians, and also serves as the Rehabilitation Treatment Center for Persons with Disabilities in Huangpu District, Shanghai. The department has always adhered to the development goal of "being rooted in Huangpu District, serving all of Shanghai, radiating to the Yangtze River Delta, and becoming a domestically first-class rehabilitation specialty with international standards that influences all of China," continuously improving rehabilitation medicine service capacity and level to meet the people's growing and diversified demand for rehabilitation medical services. II. Key Indicators The department is managed in a "single institution, five campuses" model, with flexible mobility of rehabilitation personnel and shared research resources. The "five campuses" include Ruijin Main Hospital (Huangpu Campus), Yuanyang Campus, North Campus, Luwan Branch, and Shanghai Ruijin Rehabilitation Hospital. The total medical area exceeds 3,000 square meters, with 140 rehabilitation beds (32 beds in Ward 1 of the Main Hospital Yuanyang Campus and 108 beds in Ruijin Rehabilitation Hospital). Annual discharges are 1,500 patient cases, consultations 10,000 person-times, and outpatient visits 40,000 person-times. There are currently 107 medical personnel, including 25 rehabilitation physicians, 2 chief physicians, and 6 associate chief physicians; 1 associate researcher; 51 therapists, including 1 associate chief therapist and 10 supervising therapists; and 31 rehabilitation specialty nursing personnel, including 1 associate chief nurse. In addition, more than 90 medical, teaching, and research personnel, including resident base physicians, specialty base physicians, rehabilitation therapy interns, and graduate students, are managed on duty in daily operations. At present, the total team size exceeds 200 people. The department possesses advanced rehabilitation equipment such as near-infrared functional brain imaging devices, neuroelectrophysiological examination equipment, TMS-MEP measurement systems, motion capture systems, wireless surface electromyography devices, transcranial magnetic stimulation therapeutic devices, upper limb rehabilitation robots, gait analysis systems, virtual reality systems, rehabilitation assessment and treatment systems, balance function assessment systems, and CPET cardiopulmonary function testing. The team's internationally advanced instruments for both clinical and research use are valued at over 12 million yuan. III. Department Characteristics The Ruijin Rehabilitation Department was the first in China to establish a specialty collaboration model of "multidisciplinary linkage oriented toward functional impairment" and a rehabilitation operation model of "full disease course in the loop." The disease types covered include early-stage critical care rehabilitation, brain injury rehabilitation, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, bone and joint rehabilitation, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, and from these five sub-specialties have been developed (orthopedics, brain injury, spinal cord injury, cardiopulmonary, assessment, and rehabilitation engineering). It led the establishment of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, coordinating the development of rehabilitation medicine specialties across 14 affiliated hospitals. It has established a distinctive research direction in rehabilitation medicine-engineering intersection. The discipline began operating rehabilitation wards in 1991. The Shanghai Rehabilitation Treatment Quality Control Center has been affiliated with the Ruijin Rehabilitation Department for 16 consecutive years. It has a rich variety of practice forms and has successively carried out medical, teaching, and research cooperation with internationally first-class rehabilitation institutions. In Ruijin Hospital's 14th Five-Year Plan, a 5G rehabilitation equipment dedicated network was established for Ruijin Hospital. It currently covers the 2nd and 7th floors of the rehabilitation outpatient department of the main hospital, the 8th floor of Ruijin Rehabilitation Hospital, and Ward 1 of Yuanyang Rehabilitation, specifically supporting the Ruijin team in establishing a MICA assessment-treatment-monitoring rehabilitation equipment system.
