The Department of Rheumatology and Immunology at Ruijin Hospital was established in September 2015. It is a well-structured, united, and highly capable clinical technical team and translational research group.
The discipline leader, Professor Yang Chengde, is a chief physician and doctoral supervisor. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Chinese Rheumatology Association, Chair of the Shanghai Rheumatology Association, Vice President of the Rheumatology Specialty Committee of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association, Standing Committee Member of the Rheumatology Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and Vice Chair of the Rheumatology Specialty Committee of the Cross-Strait Medical and Health Exchange Association. He is also a member of the expert group for training in the rheumatology and immunology specialty base. He has long been engaged in clinical and basic research on autoimmune diseases and autoinflammatory diseases. He has presided over 6 general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and, as first author or corresponding author, has published more than 50 SCI papers in journals such as Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, Arthritis & Rheumatology, Journal of Immunology, Lancet Diabetes, and British Medical Journal. He has received multiple awards, including the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Science and Technology (6th contributor), the First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education (5th contributor), the First Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award (5th contributor), and the Second Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award (2nd contributor). Under Professor Yang Chengde's leadership, the department relies on the comprehensive strength of Ruijin Hospital to continuously improve clinical service capacity, strengthen the development strategy of rheumatology and immunology subspecialties, and focus on building subspecialties such as systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, and adult-onset Still's disease. At present, the discipline is a member of the Antiphospholipid Syndrome International Alliance (APS ACTION member). It has systematically reported the clinical manifestations and current clinical treatment status of antiphospholipid antibodies in the Chinese population, discovered new disease biomarkers, and gained new understanding of the pathogenesis. In the area of adult-onset Still's disease, it has established a Shanghai database, first reported the clinical characteristics of the disease in the Chinese population, identified disease susceptibility loci, systematically studied the mechanisms of the inflammatory cascade, and reported the current treatment status in China.
The discipline is currently a doctoral program site in rheumatology and immunology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. The discipline has formulated detailed talent echelon construction and talent training plans, created a good academic environment, and promoted outstanding talents to stand out. At present, there are 2 doctoral students in the scientific research track, 3 doctoral students in the eight-year French program, 4 doctoral students in the eight-year clinical program, 2 professional doctoral students, and 2 clinical master's students. Six physicians in the department have studied at outstanding overseas medical schools, including the University of California, Los Angeles; Duke University in the United States; the University of Sydney in Australia; the University of Michigan in the United States; and the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom for study and exchange. The discipline maintains and expands good cooperative relationships with numerous overseas universities and medical institutions and invites well-known domestic and international experts to give lectures from time to time. At the same time, it actively creates convenient conditions and makes full use of national and discipline construction funds and research funds, combined with various talent training programs such as Ruijin Hospital's "Outstanding Young Teachers" training plan, to improve physicians' personal qualities and comprehensive abilities.
The department currently has 21 beds, with approximately 1,600 patient admissions per year and approximately 45,000 outpatient visits per year. In daily medical work, the department adheres to the concept of "whole-process management and dedicated service." The department opens rheumatology and immunology specialty clinics 5 days per week, with 3 special expert clinics and 2 expert clinics per week, making it convenient for patients to seek medical care.
The department has gradually consolidated and focused its discipline development direction with professional characteristics. It has now formed a medical team capable of handling various difficult and critical rheumatology and immunology cases and conducting clinical research and translational research related to rheumatology and immunology diseases. The ratio of medical and nursing staff meets the needs of work and development. In clinical work, each key professional member has his or her own strengths, takes the sustainable development of the specialty as their responsibility, and is courageous in innovation, bringing the department's development to a new level. The younger generation is growing vigorously, ensuring the continuous strengthening of the rheumatology and immunology discipline.
