The Department of Geriatrics at Renji Hospital is the first doctoral and master's degree granting program in geriatrics in Shanghai, and one of the first batch of national geriatrics specialty training bases. Over the years, it has achieved outstanding accomplishments in both research and clinical practice in geriatric hypertension and geriatric critical care. In recent years, it has developed new distinctive subspecialties in sarcopenia, geriatric endocrine and metabolic diseases, osteoporosis, geriatric nutrition, and the diagnosis and treatment of geriatric multimorbidity.
Clinical Features
Since its establishment, the department has consistently emphasized the integration of individual development and discipline construction. Talent cultivation follows the principle of combining recruitment and nurturing, strengthening the training of young talents, and building a medical and nursing team with high ideological awareness and a spirit of dedication. The department adheres to the mission of "patient first, quality-oriented, internally enforcing standardized quality, externally building a civilized image, and advancing the department through science and education," promoting the development of subspecialty teams. Currently, in addition to specialty clinics for geriatric diseases and hypertension, the department has added specialty clinics for sarcopenia, comprehensive geriatric assessment, geriatric multimorbidity, geriatric endocrinology, geriatric osteoporosis, and geriatric cardiovascular diseases, to maximally meet the healthcare needs of an aging society. At the same time, it has fully completed the layout of discipline subspecialties, laying the foundation for building a first-class geriatric medicine center with distinctive characteristics. Clinically, the department breaks away from the single-disease diagnosis and treatment model, emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration, and centers on patients, building clinical service features centered on multimorbidity management, polypharmacy management, and holistic patient management. With urban development, the department has also established a dedicated health management team to undertake medical support tasks for various large-scale events and summits, actively serving society.
Research and Education Features
In 2021, the department undertook the first National Geriatric Medicine Talent Training Program, providing talent for key geriatric physicians and integrated medical and elderly care institutions. At the same time, it actively promotes discipline construction and development, forming a standardized residency training and specialty training teaching system with geriatric characteristics. The department regularly conducts emergency diagnosis and treatment standardization training, professional study sessions, case discussions, and research seminars to help young talents grow rapidly. The department has established subspecialty groups in sarcopenia, geriatric multimorbidity, geriatric hypertension, geriatric critical care, geriatric osteoporosis, geriatric endocrinology, and clinical nutrition, with layered development based on a PI responsibility system plus competitive recruitment system, actively strengthening and promoting cooperation with well-known domestic and international research institutes. Currently, a dedicated cohort study database has been established for sarcopenia and geriatric multimorbidity, and in the future, a specialty big data pool will also be built to achieve regional medical resource and data sharing, enhancing medical service capacity and research output.
Cultural Development
The department emphasizes ideological and political work and team building, regularly holding special study sessions on medical humanities education and professional conduct development, actively participating in social welfare activities, and always adhering to the concept of medical and nursing staff as one family, enhancing teamwork spirit among colleagues. In 2021, the department completed the design and production of its department emblem, established a departmental cultural calling card, making the department more cohesive and united, and created a departmental WeChat official account platform, comprehensively building an online and offline departmental cultural brand. The department emblem signifies that every medical and nursing staff member in the Department of Geriatrics at Renji Hospital upholds the concept of "patient first," accompanying, helping, and healing patients with heart and love. Relying on the excellent disciplinary platform of Renji Hospital, the department takes "striving and perseverance" as the main theme for the future.
