The Department of Rheumatology at Renji Hospital, founded in 1979, is one of the traditional preeminent disciplines of our hospital. As one of the earliest departments in China to conduct research, diagnosis, and treatment of rheumatic diseases, it currently houses the China-Australia Center for Individualized Immunotherapy, a National Key Clinical Specialty, a Shanghai Top-Priority Clinical Medical Center, a Shanghai Key Clinical Specialty, a Characteristic Discipline of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, one of the first units authorized to confer master's and doctoral degrees and to host a postdoctoral research station in rheumatology, the Shanghai Institute of Rheumatology, the Shanghai Clinical Quality Control Center for Rheumatology and Immunology, a National Drug Clinical Research Base (Rheumatology and Immunology), and a standardized training base for internal medicine residents and rheumatology specialists. It consistently ranks among the top three nationwide in the Fudan University Specialty Rankings and holds significant academic influence both domestically and internationally. The department currently has 126 authorized beds, including 8 rheumatology ICU beds—the only ones of their kind in China—and 10 GCP research beds. The annual number of discharged patients exceeds 5,000, with key diseases accounting for more than 70% of admissions. Among these, the volume of admissions for complex and critical conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and dermatomyositis ranks first in Shanghai. The annual outpatient volume reaches 300,000 visits, ranking first nationwide for many consecutive years. It serves as the chair unit of the Rheumatology and Immunology Branch of the Rheumatology Biobank; it consistently maintains more than 40 ongoing projects, including national multicenter studies (as lead unit), international multicenter clinical trials, and large-scale and original investigator-initiated trials (IITs), among which there are more than 10 cutting-edge cell therapy projects. The Department of Rheumatology at Renji Hospital comprises: the Institute of Rheumatology, the Rheumatology and Immunology Clinical Research Team, the China-Australia Individualized Clinical Research Center, and the Clinical Biobank. Over the past 5 years, it has undertaken 45 provincial and ministerial-level projects. Team members have published nearly 300 SCI papers as first authors or corresponding authors in the past 5 years, including 50 SCI papers with an impact factor above 10, and have been repeatedly invited to deliver plenary lectures at major domestic and international conferences. Long-term cooperative relationships have been established with internationally renowned universities and research institutions such as Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Stanford University, the University of Washington, Australian National University, the University of Manchester, the University of Zurich, the University of Erlangen, and the University of Strasbourg. The department has conducted a series of national and international multicenter clinical drug trials and has participated in the formulation of multiple domestic and international clinical diagnosis and treatment guidelines for rheumatic and immune diseases. As the Shanghai Clinical Quality Control Center for Rheumatology, it is fully responsible for guiding and managing the clinical diagnosis and treatment standards for rheumatic diseases across the city. The department boasts an outstanding talent team that combines senior, mid-career, and young professionals with strong capabilities in clinical care, education, and research. There are 7 doctoral supervisors and 4 master's supervisors, with 46 clinicians, including 8 full professors/chief physicians, 13 associate professors/associate chief physicians, and 17 attending and resident physicians. All young and mid-career physicians hold master's degrees or above, and more than half have studied or trained abroad. The disciplinary梯队 is vibrant, with 85% of members under the age of 45. Through continuous development, the department strives to achieve further breakthroughs in cutting-edge clinical research, the construction of high-quality cohorts for major rheumatic and immune diseases, the diagnostic and therapeutic capacity for complex and critical rheumatic diseases, and the cultivation of outstanding young talents, so as to maintain its leading position domestically in terms of overall strength, enhance its domestic reach and international visibility, and become a first-class rheumatology diagnosis and treatment center in Asia with considerable international influence.
