Department Introduction
Department Overview
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Ruijin Hospital is one of the earliest units in Shanghai to carry out radiotherapy. Since its establishment in 1993, the department has implemented the concept of comprehensive treatment in tumor therapy and followed international standardized treatment standards. In recent years, the department has developed rapidly, gathering a group of professionals engaged in tumor radiotherapy. Currently, the department has a total of 24 physicians, including 1 chief physician and 9 associate chief physicians. The department currently possesses 6 linear accelerators at the main campus and the Tumor Proton Center, as well as the first domestic synchrotron proton therapy device. The annual number of treated cases is nearly 4,000. There are currently 3 wards with a total of 115 beds, with over 7,000 inpatient admissions and over 40,000 outpatient visits annually. The department currently possesses the most advanced radiotherapy equipment internationally, including Varian's series of high-end accelerators: the adaptive intelligent accelerator Ethos, TrueBeam, Edge (stereotactic radiosurgery system), and Trilogy; the third-generation TOMO RADIXACT system; United Imaging's uRT-linac high-end accelerator and three-dimensional brachytherapy (afterloading) treatment equipment. Advanced hardware and software equipment can achieve all the most advanced radiotherapy techniques, including adaptive radiotherapy (Adaptive Radio-therapy), HyperArc, stereotactic radiosurgery/stereotactic body radiotherapy (SRS/SBRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), three-dimensional afterloading brachytherapy, and other techniques. Meanwhile, our center has successfully completed the pre-market clinical trial of the first domestic synchrotron proton therapy device project and will soon officially commence operations. Relying on Ruijin Hospital's strong collaborative departments in medical oncology, surgical oncology, imaging, and pathology, our department has formed a distinctive, high-level comprehensive diagnosis and treatment protocol for tumor patients.
The department's sub-specialty expert groups include head and neck tumors, breast malignancies, thoracic tumors, lymphatic system tumors, gastrointestinal tumors, urological and reproductive system tumors, gynecological tumors, bone and soft tissue tumors, and nervous system tumors. Among patients treated in our department, the 5-year local control and survival rates for postoperative breast cancer are 96.1% and 92.5%, respectively, and the 5-year local control and survival rates for postoperative cervical cancer patients are 88% and 77%, respectively.
In the past five years, department members have received funding from 6 national-level research projects and 10 Shanghai municipal and bureau-level projects, and have led multiple investigator-initiated national multicenter clinical studies. Multiple individuals have received various talent programs at the Shanghai municipal level and Shanghai Jiao Tong University level. In the past 5 years, a total of 104 scientific and technological papers of various types have been published, including 71 SCI papers, with the highest impact factor of 14.92 and a cumulative total SCI impact factor of 240.36. The department has received numerous titles such as "Shanghai Youth Civilization Unit," "Party Branch Construction Demonstration Site," and "Shanghai Jiao Tong University Youth League Committee Unit."
For many years, the department has been committed to implementing patient-centered, one-stop treatment services featuring whole-process management by specialized nurses. The medical team integrates comprehensive professionals including clinical physicians, medical physicists, network and maintenance engineers, radiotherapy technologists, and specialized nurses. In the spacious and welcoming radiotherapy waiting area, patients can complete registration, appointment scheduling, outpatient consultation, treatment, and follow-up seamlessly. Adhering to the diagnosis and treatment principles of no waiting for patients, no missed diagnoses, and no loss to follow-up, we provide patients with a better treatment experience through warm, orderly, efficient, and precise medical service quality.
