Department Introduction Department Overview The Department of Urology at Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (Shanghai Ruijin Hospital) was established in 1949 and is one of the earliest urology departments in China. It is a key discipline of the "211" Project of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and has been listed multiple times in the Fudan Hospital Specialty (Urology) Rankings. Since February 2017, Ruijin Hospital has introduced Professor Xu Danfeng, a top domestic expert in minimally invasive surgery and urological oncology, as the discipline leader of Urology, leading the department to a new level. The Department of Urology at Ruijin Hospital has a kidney transplantation center, a urodynamics laboratory, and an extracorporeal shock wave room; it is equipped with the world's most advanced DaVinci robotic surgical system, the latest domestic "Toumai" robotic surgical system, 3D laparoscopy, 4K laparoscopy, 180W green laser, Moses laser, 2μm laser, 100W holmium laser, ureteroscope (flexible), percutaneous nephroscope, etc.; annual outpatient visits are nearly 120,000, and annual surgical volume exceeds 3,000 cases. Main Medical Features of Ruijin Urology 1. Adrenal surgery: Since the first domestic adrenal surgery for primary aldosteronism was performed in 1957, adrenal surgery has become a highlight of the Ruijin Urology Department, with experience of more than 700 adrenal surgical procedures per year. 2. Minimally invasive surgery for urological tumors: As a pioneer of minimally invasive urology, the Department of Urology at Ruijin Hospital has always been at the forefront of the development of minimally invasive techniques in China. Today, the minimally invasive surgery rate in Ruijin Urology exceeds 99%, applying various robot-assisted laparoscopic, conventional laparoscopic, and endourological minimally invasive surgeries to the treatment of kidney cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, and other tumor diseases. 3. Kidney transplantation: In 1969, Ruijin Hospital performed its first allogeneic kidney transplantation, making Ruijin one of the first units in New China to carry out kidney transplantation. Ruijin kidney transplantation has unique experience in renal function protection, transplant immunology, and individualized treatment with immunosuppressants. 4. Urinary stones: The department has lasers of various power levels, tailoring individualized treatment plans for each stone patient, and has established a specialized stone clinic to develop follow-up plans for patients. 5. Surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia: The department has the 180W green laser surgical system, the earliest officially clinically applied system in Shanghai, and has maturely carried out transurethral high-power green laser prostate surgery. It was among the first in Shanghai to officially apply spiral prostatic metal stents and ureteral metal stents, providing treatment options for elderly, high-risk patients who cannot tolerate conventional urethral surgery. 6. Individualized treatment of urological tumors: Our department, in collaboration with the Departments of Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Pathology, and Radiology, has carried out a multidisciplinary team (MDT) model for urological tumors, proposing the best treatment plans suitable for patients, enabling patients to further benefit from internationally advanced integrative medical resources and truly achieving precision medicine and individualized treatment.
