The Department of Pathology at Peking University International Hospital is one of the earliest established and important platform departments of the hospital. Since its establishment in 2014, after more than 10 years of continuous development and progress, it has now become a modern pathology department with considerable scale, and the volume of pathological examinations has increased year by year, with the number of external consultations exceeding 40,000 cases in both 2024 and 2025. In addition to completing the pathological specimen examination work submitted by all clinical departments throughout the hospital, the department also undertakes difficult pathological consultation work from other hospitals and can receive remote consultations through the internet platform from hospitals affiliated with Peking University Healthcare Group. In a scientifically and advanced designed space of nearly 2,000 square meters, the department is equipped with modern large-scale routine pathology technical equipment, a cytology laboratory including liquid-based thin-layer technology, an automated immunohistochemistry laboratory conducting hundreds of antibody stainings and tumor companion diagnostic projects, a fluorescence in situ hybridization room, a BSL2-level molecular pathology laboratory, and an advanced digital slide scanning system that assists in the development of remote pathology and artificial intelligence-assisted pathological diagnosis technology. The Department of Pathology currently has 18 staff members. The physician team includes 2 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, 4 attending physicians, and 2 resident physicians; the technical team includes 1 associate chief technician, 4 supervising technicians, and 2 technicians; the vast majority hold a master's degree or above. Professor Shen Danhua, former director of the Department of Pathology at Peking University People's Hospital, was the founder of the Department of Pathology at Peking University International Hospital. Ten years later, she returned to the Department of Pathology as a specially appointed expert to assist in strengthening the department's management and enhancing its academic level. Professor Shen has deep attainments in gynecological, bone tumor, and breast pathology diagnosis, holds positions in multiple academic organizations, and serves as an editorial board member of multiple journals. She receives over a thousand difficult pathological consultations from all over the country each year and is a well-known pathology expert in China. The department also has several middle-aged backbone experts serving in the Beijing Society of Pathology and other societies, and young physicians are also growing. In addition to undertaking hospital-level key and young rising star research projects, the department also encourages them to actively participate in various slide-reading activities in Beijing and national professional academic conferences in pathology, showcasing the elegance of young pathologists at Peking University International Hospital and broadening their horizons.
