The Assisted Reproduction Department of the International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital of the China Welfare Institute was established in May 2000 and is currently located at Building 3, No. 1961 Huashan Road. In 2002, it became one of the first assisted reproductive medicine centers in Shanghai approved by the Ministry of Health, offering in vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). With first-class equipment, standardized management, and excellent service, it provides assisted reproductive technology services to couples with infertility. In February 2001, the first IVF test-tube baby was born; in April 2001, the first ICSI test-tube baby was born; and in December 2001, the first test-tube baby from frozen embryo transfer was born. In 2009, it took the lead in Shanghai in carrying out vitrification technology for embryos, greatly improving the survival rate of frozen-thawed embryos.
In 2014, the Assisted Reproduction Department introduced the assisted reproduction team ranked first by Expertscape, as well as the first PGD center and training base approved by the Ministry of Health. It routinely carries out various assisted reproductive technologies and has provided fertility assistance technology to tens of thousands of families with reproductive disorders. To date, more than 1,000 cycles of PGD and PGS have been carried out, with a diagnostic success rate of over 99% and a clinical pregnancy rate of nearly 50%. Both its comprehensive indicators and the scale of implementation and range of diagnosed diseases for monogenic disease PGD are among the leading levels in China. In 2015, Shanghai's first healthy baby from genome-wide screening PGS was born; in 2016, China's first "cancer-free" PGD baby was born from a thyroid cancer family using single-cell high-throughput sequencing combined with karyomapping; in 2018, it took the lead in using a polar body one-fiftieth the size of an oocyte for genetic testing, fulfilling the motherhood dream of a mother with Madelung deformity; and in 2019, the world's first healthy newborn with Schaaf-Yang syndrome, an imprinted gene disease, blocked through PGT technology was successfully delivered.
