The diagnosis, treatment, and research of pain at our hospital can be traced back to the 1970s, when we took the lead nationwide in conducting acupuncture anesthesia and analgesia services. We were awarded the Scientific Research Achievement Prize by the Ministry of Health. Premier Zhou Enlai once dispatched Marshal Ye Jianying to the hospital to guide our work, and state leaders such as Prince Sihanouk, as well as medical experts from the United States, Japan, Europe, and other countries, have all visited our hospital. To enhance the effectiveness of diagnosing and treating pain-related diseases, the hospital applied to add pain diagnosis and treatment as a specialty in 2007 and established a pain outpatient clinic. In 2010, an independent Department of Pain Medicine was established, with substantial investment in personnel and funding. Priority was given to building a minimally invasive pain treatment technology platform based on modern imaging techniques, establishing dedicated pain treatment wards, and progressively acquiring equipment such as radiofrequency ablation devices for pain management. Concurrently, significant efforts were made to cultivate specialized talent in pain medicine. Multiple national and provincial/ministerial major research grants were secured, and a comprehensive system for pain diagnosis and treatment was essentially established. To further improve the quality of pain diagnosis and treatment, strengthen the integration of interdisciplinary fields related to pain management, comprehensively enhance the hospital's overall service capabilities, thoroughly address the challenges of pain patients having to visit multiple locations, the suboptimal outcomes of independent specialty-based treatment for pain-related conditions, and the waste of medical resources, and ultimately achieve "one-stop" pain treatment, the hospital consolidated its advantageous resources in pain diagnosis and treatment in 2013 and established the Department of Pain Medicine (Medical Center), with Vice President Liu Xiaoguang serving concurrently as its director. On the basis of comprehensive and in-depth development of subspecialties in pain diagnosis and treatment, including spinal and joint pain, neuropathic pain, cancer pain, pharmacological treatment and evaluation of pain, and minimally invasive interventional pain therapy, the department has actively expanded deep integration with related interdisciplinary fields, combined basic and clinical pain research, and advanced translational medicine work in pain, thereby broadening the scope of disciplinary development. Currently, the Department of Pain Medicine operates 30 inpatient beds and handles more than 25,000 outpatient visits annually (Pain Medical Center). It comprises five major subspecialties: spinal and joint pain, neuropathic pain, cancer pain, minimally invasive interventional pain therapy, and pharmacological treatment and evaluation of pain. Clinical diagnosis, treatment, and research are closely focused on common, frequently occurring, and complex diseases. In particular, the department holds technical advantages in spinal endoscopic techniques and minimally invasive interventional treatment of spinal disorders. Various nerve blocks, neurolytic procedures, neuromodulation, and drug injections guided by CT, C-arm fluoroscopy, and ultrasound are also distinctive features, providing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services to a broad population of pain patients.
