On February 26, 2019, under the guidance of the national policy vigorously promoting the development of general practice, the Department of General Practice was established at Peking University Third Hospital, with a general practice ward set up at the Central Party School Campus. In early 2024, under the hospital's vertical management policy, the Comprehensive Internal Medicine departments at the Central Party School Campus, Northern Campus, and Capital Airport Campus were integrated into the Department of General Practice for unified management, and an additional general practice ward was established at the Capital Airport Campus. Currently, the Department of General Practice comprises 28 physicians and 26 nurses, with Dr. Zhao Wei serving as the department director. Based on the gradual improvement of disciplinary development, the Department of General Practice at Peking University Third Hospital is progressively transitioning toward a model in which general practice serves as a bridge and guide—namely, community patients are accurately referred to specialists through the general practice department of a comprehensive hospital, thereby achieving bidirectional referral between comprehensive hospitals and community healthcare institutions. Meanwhile, the Department of General Practice is enhancing the teaching capacity of community healthcare institutions through demonstrative training by general practice faculty, and jointly cultivating competent general practitioners with community healthcare institutions. By fully leveraging the advantages of the general practice department in a comprehensive hospital in clinical practice, teaching, and research, and utilizing the connections established with primary healthcare institutions through bidirectional patient referral, the department aims to achieve the goal of cultivating highly qualified general practice talents. Currently, to better fulfill the function of talent cultivation in a comprehensive hospital's general practice department, the department is introducing innovative teaching concepts and conducting in-depth and meticulous research on methodologies, including the application of modern teaching methods and technologies, with the expectation of playing an active role in advancing general practice talent development. The Department of General Practice is equipped with general practice wards and general practice outpatient clinics. Comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and management of chronic diseases are fully carried out in both outpatient and ward settings, encompassing multidimensional evaluations of activities of daily living, cognitive function, fall risk, nutritional status, mental and emotional disorders, and polypharmacy risks, with the development of integrated prevention and treatment plans incorporating prevention, diagnosis, treatment, nursing, rehabilitation, and management. Currently, general practice wards are located at the Central Party School Campus (General Practice Ward I) and the Capital Airport Campus (General Practice Ward II), with 27 open beds, primarily admitting patients with cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, metabolic diseases, and multimorbidity. The general practice wards are equipped with advanced medical devices, including cardiopulmonary exercise testing, arterial stiffness detection, 6-minute walk test, body composition analysis, enhanced external counterpulsation, rehabilitation cycling, and resistance training equipment. Under the leadership of the department director, the department actively explores the working model of general practice wards and has currently developed a five-in-one diagnosis and treatment model integrating comprehensive assessment, clinical diagnosis and treatment, personalized health education, visceral rehabilitation training, and long-term chronic disease follow-up. General practice outpatient clinics are established at the main campus of Peking University Third Hospital, the Central Party School Campus, the Capital Airport Campus, the Northern Campus, and the Haidian North Campus, primarily conducting disease screening, diagnosis and treatment of patients with unexplained symptoms, comprehensive management of patients with multimorbidity, preoperative assessment, interpretation and guidance of physical examination reports, diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases, long-term follow-up of chronic diseases, and health education. In addition, the Department of General Practice has established a deep collaboration with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, setting up a General Practice Rehabilitation Workstation to actively carry out rehabilitation assessment, guidance, and training for patients with chronic diseases. In summary, the Department of General Practice at Peking University Third Hospital, in light of the development trends in general practice and its own characteristics, actively strengthens disciplinary development, fully leverages the advantages of a large comprehensive hospital affiliated with Peking University, and strives for comprehensive development in clinical care, teaching, research, prevention, management, and rehabilitation, working to enhance the department's overall strength and endeavoring to build the discipline into a first-class clinical specialty.
