The Department of Pediatrics at Peking University Third Hospital was established in 1958 when the hospital was founded. Through over 60 years of inheritance and development across several generations, the discipline has gradually expanded in scale. In 1984, it was approved by the State Education Commission as a master's degree conferring site; in 1995, it became a doctoral degree conferring site, and in the same year, in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, it was awarded the national honorary title of "Baby-Friendly Hospital"; in 2003, it received the "Special Contribution Award" for maternal and infant safety from Haidian District; in 2005, it jointly established the Peking University Department of Pediatrics with the Department of Pediatrics of Peking University First Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics of Peking University People's Hospital, and was approved as a key discipline under the "211 Project"; in 2010, again in collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, it was designated by the Beijing Municipal Health Commission as the critical maternal and perinatal infant care center for Haidian District. In 2016, with the relaxation of the national second-child policy, leveraging our strength in the field of neonatology in Beijing, it was designated by the Beijing Municipal Health Commission as a municipal designated hospital for critical neonatal referral and treatment. In 2018, it was rated by the Beijing Municipal Health Commission as a municipal-level demonstration base for neonatal healthcare specialties. The Department of Pediatrics has 110 beds, comprising five divisions: the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Neonatal Ward, the General Pediatric Ward, the Pediatric Outpatient and Emergency Department, and the Child Health Development Center. The specialty covers 11 subspecialties, including neonatology, critical care medicine, gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, endocrinology, neurology, nephrology, cardiovascular medicine, rheumatology and immunology, ultrasound diagnostics, and child healthcare. Among these, neonatology and child healthcare are the key specialties of the department, and the department is at the forefront of domestic peers in the fields of critical neonatal rescue, comprehensive management of premature infants, short stature, and the diagnosis and treatment of food allergies. In 2019, the outpatient and emergency visits totaled 233,707, with an average daily outpatient volume of 641, and 3,268 discharged patients. The department currently has 161 staff members, including 44 physicians (20 with senior professional titles and 24 with junior or intermediate titles), 108 nurses, and 9 auxiliary technical personnel. To date, more than 70 doctoral and master's degree students have been trained. The discipline's scientific research ranking is at an advanced level domestically within the same field.
