Introduction to the Emergency Department The Emergency Department of Peking University Third Hospital was established in 1984. Through 40 years of development and accumulation, and thanks to the dedication and contributions of several generations of emergency medicine professionals, it has earned a distinguished reputation in the field of emergency medicine both in Beijing and nationwide. In 2022, it was designated as a National Key Clinical Specialty. The Emergency Department of Peking University Third Hospital currently has a team of over 200 medical and nursing staff, predominantly composed of young and middle-aged professionals, providing a solid foundation and conditions for sustainable development. It is now organized into one department with five divisions (the main site, the Airport Campus, the Chongli Campus, the Qinhuangdao Campus, and the Northern New District). The main site has 133 open beds, divided into five units: consultation rooms, observation wards, resuscitation rooms, emergency wards, and emergency intensive care units, serving nearly 300,000 patients annually. Centered on the clinical diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of critical and complex diseases, six specialized yet versatile technical teams have been established (including the Cardiac and Great Vessel Specialty Group, Resuscitation and Neurology Specialty Group, Toxicology and Blood Purification Specialty Group, Critical Care and Infection Specialty Group, Gastroenterology and Nutrition Specialty Group, and Trauma and Disaster Rescue Specialty Group), with steadily improving capabilities in critical care, making it a referral center for critically ill patients in Haidian District and surrounding suburban areas of Beijing. Under the leadership of Chief Physician Ma Qingbian, the team pioneered the first therapeutic hypothermia treatment for cardiac arrest in China in 2012, and in 2016, took the lead in initiating extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) domestically. Leveraging these two key technologies, a cardiac arrest treatment system aligned with international standards and leading nationally has been established, greatly improving the survival rate of cardiac arrest patients. Additionally, a comprehensive poisoning treatment system has been developed, creating a first-class critical care platform in China. The outstanding professional expertise has also laid a strong foundation for public health preparedness, achieving a series of results in emergency response. The Emergency Department of Peking University Third Hospital is among the first batch of certified standardized training bases for emergency medicine residents, specialist physician training bases, and emergency specialty nurse training bases accredited by the Beijing Nursing Association and the Chinese Nursing Association. It is qualified to train postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, and master's students, and undertakes extensive teaching responsibilities, including eight-year program students, undergraduates, postgraduates, specialist physicians, visiting physicians, and continuing education, with comprehensive theoretical learning, clinical rotations, skills training, and research training plans and management systems. It has cultivated successive cohorts of emergency medicine professionals and has received multiple teaching awards from Peking University Health Science Center, the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and nursing associations. Over the past five years, the Emergency Department has led more than 10 national and provincial/ministerial-level research projects, published over 120 papers in SCI and core journals, obtained more than 10 patents, taken the lead in developing over 10 expert consensus statements/guidelines, and compiled 10 professional monographs, making significant contributions to advancing the development of emergency medicine. In 2021, it was awarded the Beijing Youth Civilization Award, and in 2022, it was designated as a National Key Clinical Specialty. In 2024, it received the Second Prize of the Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award, the Second Prize of the 2024 Beijing Medical Science and Technology Award from the Beijing Medical Association, and the 2025 Huaxia Medical Health Management Award.
