Department of Endocrinology, Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH), was established in 1984 under the preparatory efforts of Professor Huang Dayou, a renowned internist, and was officially founded in 1985. Through the relentless efforts of successive department directors, including Li Qiongfang, Deng Zhengzhao, and Hong Tianpei, the department has developed substantial comprehensive strength in clinical practice, education, and research, establishing itself as a leading endocrinology team among the top-tier large hospitals in China. The department currently has a total of 49 staff members, including physicians, nurses, and technicians, comprising 5 professors/chief physicians, 2 researchers, 7 associate professors/deputy chief physicians, 10 attending physicians, 1 assistant researcher, 6 resident physicians, 3 senior technologists, 2 deputy chief nurses, 7 supervisor nurses, and 5 nurses (including nurse practitioners and registered nurses). Among them, 23 hold doctoral degrees, and 2 diabetes specialist nurses have received professional training at the Joslin Diabetes Center in the United States and in Hong Kong. The department comprises an endocrinology inpatient ward (30 beds in the main campus and 20 beds in the airport campus), endocrinology outpatient clinics, an endocrinology laboratory, and a clinical pharmacology institution unit. In recent years, under the leadership of Department Director Professor Hong Tianpei, a group of accomplished experts and academic骨干 in their prime has emerged, and the department has been repeatedly recognized as an outstanding management team by PUTH. The department emphasizes project-driven disciplinary development and the close integration of clinical practice, education, and research. Its research on pancreatic β-cell pathophysiology, stem cell differentiation, and endocrine reproductive disorders holds a leading position domestically and has gained international influence, with multiple papers published in high-impact international journals such as JAMA. The Department of Endocrinology at PUTH has been nominated for the Fudan Version of the Chinese Hospital Specialty Reputation Rankings for 7 consecutive years, ranking 16th nationally and 6th in North China in the "2022 Annual Specialty Reputation Rankings" released on November 25, 2023. In 2021, it ranked 16th in the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences' Science and Technology Influence Specialty Rankings, and from 2016 to 2021, it was tied for 10th place overall. In October 2023, the department was approved for the 2023 National Key Clinical Specialty Construction Project, with support from central government financial funds. I. Clinical Work With the rapid socioeconomic development, endocrine and metabolic diseases have increasingly become major threats to public health. The department's annual outpatient volume exceeds 150,000 visits, making it one of the largest endocrinology departments in Beijing by outpatient volume, with approximately 1,200 inpatient admissions per year and an average length of stay of about 7 days. Diabetes and thyroid diseases are the primary clinical focuses, with a high level of diagnostic and therapeutic expertise also demonstrated in adrenal disorders, pituitary diseases, gonadal disorders, growth and developmental abnormalities, obesity, and bone metabolic diseases. In addition to routine specialist and subspecialty outpatient clinics, the department has established diabetes patient education clinics and nutritional guidance clinics tailored to the needs of diabetic patients, where specialist nurses and dietitians provide one-on-one counseling to enhance patients' self-management awareness and establish electronic management records. To address the needs of patients undergoing assisted reproduction, a specialized endocrinology and reproductive health clinic has been established, providing systematic management for women of childbearing age with thyroid or other endocrine disorders during the pre-conception, prenatal, and postpartum periods. Notably, extensive clinical data have been accumulated on the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid autoimmunity in patients undergoing assisted reproduction, and in December 2017, a large randomized controlled clinical study was published in JAMA (impact factor: 44.405) in collaboration with the Reproductive Medicine Center, significantly enhancing the department's international clinical reputation in this field. Furthermore, the department dispatches specialists to community hospitals weekly for guidance, contributing to alleviating the difficulty of accessing medical care and exploring an integrated management model between large hospitals and community healthcare institutions. The endocrinology inpatient ward is equipped with advanced medical devices, including continuous glucose monitoring systems, insulin pumps, and hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp systems. The endocrinology laboratory conducts laboratory testing for diabetes, thyroid diseases, and various endocrine and metabolic disorders. Additionally, a range of endocrine function tests is performed, including dexamethasone suppression tests, ACTH stimulation tests, hypoglycemia provocation tests, water deprivation-vasopressin tests, and GnRH stimulation tests. In recent years, the proportion of complex and rare diseases has increased annually. Taking DRG (Diagnosis-Related Groups) classification as an example, the department has broad DRG coverage with high complexity, accumulating experience in diagnosing and treating numerous complex and critical cases, such as Kallmann syndrome, MEN2, Erdheim-Chester syndrome, lymphocytic hypophysitis, and adrenal crisis, demonstrating the department's exceptional clinical proficiency. Beyond routine diagnosis and treatment of endocrine diseases, the department actively explores novel therapeutic approaches. Since 2000, the department has pioneered preclinical research on stem cell therapy for diabetes in China, and in 2017, it advanced stem cell therapy for diabetic kidney disease into the clinical trial phase, with filings submitted to the National Health Commission for recordation. In 2009, the department was the first internationally to elucidate the molecular pathogenesis of diabetes in patients with aniridia. In 2010, entrusted by the Ministry of Health, Director Hong Tianpei led the development of the national health industry standard "Diabetes Screening and Diagnosis." In 2015, the department collaborated with the Department of General Surgery to establish a metabolic and bariatric surgery clinic. In 2017, it led the formulation of the "Expert Consensus on the Application of Glucose-Lowering Medications in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Complicated by Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease." The department's clinical expertise has gained recognition from domestic peers and academic societies, with 10 members holding significant academic positions, including Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Endocrinology, Standing Committee Member of the Chinese Diabetes Society, Vice President of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Beijing Medical Association Endocrinology Branch, Executive Council Member of the Beijing Medical Doctor Association Endocrinology Specialty Branch, Chairman of the Endocrinology Professional Committee of the Beijing Nursing Association, and committee memberships in multiple other societies. Young骨干 members serve on the youth committees of all professional branches under the Chinese Medical Association and the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and all senior-title staff hold memberships in at least two specialty groups within the Chinese Medical Association's professional branches. In 2018, Director Hong Tianpei received the "National Famous Doctor - Outstanding Contribution" award. II. Research Work Research in the Department of Endocrinology is driven by clinical questions and guided by translational medicine. Major research directions include stem cell differentiation, basic and clinical studies on pancreatic β-cell and endothelial dysfunction, and translational research on diabetes, prediabetes, thyroid diseases, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and metabolic syndrome. The department has led over 70 national and provincial/ministerial projects, including the National Key Research and Development Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the National 973 Program, the National 863 Program, the Science and Technology Support Program, Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission projects, the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education Doctoral Fund, Ministry of Health research projects, and the China Medical Board of New York. Department members have received NSFC funding for 7 consecutive years (cumulatively 11 years), with ≥2 grants per year, and in 2023, received 5 NSFC General Program grants, bringing the cumulative total of NSFC-funded projects to 37. The department has published over 300 academic papers in domestic core journals and more than 80 in SCI-indexed journals. It has received numerous awards, including the Beijing Science and Technology Award, the National Education Commission Science and Technology Progress Award (Category A), the Beijing Medical Science and Technology Award, the Chinese Society of Endocrinology Outstanding Contribution Award (Kuang Ankun Award), the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award, and the China Insulin Secretion Research Rising Star Award. Additionally, the department has taken the lead in organizing major domestic conferences, including the inaugural Translational Medicine Forum on Endocrinology and Metabolism of the Chinese Medical Association, the inaugural Young Physicians Forum of the Chinese Diabetes Society Youth Committee, and the Beijing Endocrinology and Diabetes Annual Meeting. Members have delivered keynote lectures, symposium presentations, oral presentations, and poster sessions at numerous national and international academic conferences. III. Educational Work Since its establishment, the department has placed great emphasis on education, leveraging the mentorship role of renowned experts in medical, nursing, and research training. Multiple faculty members have received honors such as Outstanding Teacher of Peking University Health Science Center, Outstanding Teacher of PUTH, and "Good Teacher and Friend" for graduate students. PUTH was the first unit within the Peking University health system to establish a doctoral program in endocrinology and was also among the early institutions nationwide to do so. The department has trained over 50 postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, and master's students. It also undertakes extensive teaching responsibilities, including training for 8-year program medical students, graduate students, Beijing resident physicians, visiting physicians, and international students. The department has long hosted various national, Beijing municipal, and district/county-level continuing education programs covering topics such as comprehensive diabetes prevention and management, diabetes screening and early diagnosis, and endocrine disorders and reproductive health. It regularly provides comprehensive diabetes management training to physicians from 34 community hospitals within the specialty medical consortium and conducts educational training sessions in areas surrounding Beijing, enabling a large number of primary care physicians to
